Best Sulphate-Free Shampoo for Colour-Treated Hair
Thomas StrangwoodShare
If you've recently had your hair coloured — whether that's a full head of highlights, a balayage, a root touch-up or a full colour change — one of the most important things you can do to protect that colour is switch to a sulphate-free shampoo.
We say this to clients in the salon all the time, and we mean it. Colour fade is one of the most common complaints we hear, and in most cases it comes down to what's happening in the shower, not the colour itself. The right shampoo can genuinely double how long your colour looks fresh between appointments.
Here's everything you need to know, plus our picks for the best sulphate-free shampoos for colour-treated hair — all products we actually stock and recommend at Revive Hair Artists.
Why sulphate-free shampoo matters for coloured hair
Sulphates — specifically sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS) and sodium laureth sulphate (SLES) — are the cleansing agents in most standard shampoos. They're what creates that satisfying lather. They're also extremely effective at stripping things from your hair, which is exactly the problem.
When you colour your hair, the colour molecules sit inside the hair shaft. Sulphates work by opening the hair cuticle and aggressively removing oils, product buildup and — unfortunately — colour pigment at the same time. Every wash with a sulphate-containing shampoo accelerates that process.
Sulphate-free shampoos use gentler cleansing agents that clean the hair without lifting the cuticle in the same aggressive way. Your hair still gets clean — that's a myth we hear a lot, that sulphate-free shampoos don't clean properly — it just gets cleaned without the colour stripping side effect.
The difference is genuinely noticeable. Clients who make the switch typically find their colour looks vibrant for weeks longer between appointments.
What to look for in a sulphate-free shampoo for coloured hair
Not all sulphate-free shampoos are the same. When we're recommending one for colour-treated hair, we look for a few things beyond just the absence of SLS:
No parabens. Parabens are preservatives that can also affect colour longevity and cause scalp sensitivity. Most good professional sulphate-free shampoos are paraben-free too.
pH-balanced formula. Colour is deposited at a specific pH. A shampoo that maintains a slightly acidic pH (around 4.5–5.5) keeps the cuticle closed and the colour locked in. This is where professional brands have a significant advantage over supermarket alternatives.
Moisturising ingredients. Coloured hair tends to be drier than virgin hair, particularly if it's been bleached or lightened. Ingredients like argan oil, keratin and plant proteins help counteract that.
Colour-specific formulas. Some sulphate-free shampoos are designed specifically for coloured hair and include ingredients that actively protect and enhance colour vibrancy. These are worth the extra investment.
Our picks — the best sulphate-free shampoos for colour-treated hair
These are all products we stock at Revive Hair Artists. We've either used them in the salon, recommended them to clients, or both.
Moroccanoil Hydrating Shampoo
Moroccanoil is probably the brand most associated with argan oil haircare, and their sulphate-free shampoo range is genuinely excellent for coloured hair. The Hydrating Shampoo uses argan oil alongside a colour-safe cleansing system that leaves hair feeling soft and manageable without stripping.
It's a particularly good choice for dry or chemically processed hair — anyone who's had a keratin treatment needs a sulphate-free option, and Moroccanoil is one of the most reliable. The scent is also iconic, which never hurts.

Moroccanoil Blonde Perfecting Purple Shampoo
If your colour involves any blonde, highlighted or lightened sections, this is one of the best options going. The purple pigments neutralise brassiness and yellow tones between salon visits, while the sulphate-free formula keeps the colour from fading.
It's the product we most often recommend to blonde clients who want to maintain their colour at home without needing to come in as frequently for toning appointments.

Joico ColorFul Anti-Fade Shampoo
Joico's colour care range is specifically engineered to extend colour vibrancy, and the ColorFul Anti-Fade Shampoo does exactly what it says. It's sulphate-free, contains their SmartRelease technology which uses rosehip oil and arginine to repair and protect the hair fibre, and is designed to preserve colour for up to 45 washes.
It's a favourite in the salon for clients with vivid or fashion colours — the kinds of shades that naturally fade faster — because it genuinely slows that process down.

Joico Defy Damage Protective Shampoo
If your colour-treated hair is also on the fragile or damaged side — common with regular bleaching or heat styling — the Joico Defy Damage range is worth considering. It's sulphate-free and formulated with quadramine complex to rebuild broken bonds while protecting colour. Think of it as a protective shampoo that also happens to be colour-safe.

Olaplex No.4C Bond Maintenance Clarifying Shampoo
Olaplex is a brand most people know from the No.3 bond-building treatment, but their shampoo range is equally impressive. The No.4C is their clarifying option — it removes product buildup and hard water residue without sulphates, which is a genuinely difficult balance to strike.
It's ideal for anyone who uses a lot of styling products or lives in a hard water area (which is most of the UK), where mineral deposits can dull colour over time. Use it once a week alongside a regular sulphate-free shampoo for best results.

milk_shake K-Respect Preparing Shampoo
milk_shake is an Italian professional brand that's become a go-to for anyone with frizzy, curly or keratin-treated hair. The K-Respect range is specifically designed for smoothing treatments but works brilliantly as a general colour-safe shampoo for anyone whose hair needs both colour protection and frizz control.
It's sulphate-free, paraben-free, and uses a gentle keratin-based formula that leaves the hair smooth and manageable.

The Nanoworks Gold is their premium option, using a blend of bio-mineral complex and certified organic botanical oils to protect colour while targeting signs of ageing in the hair fibre.
It's a great option for clients who want a genuinely luxurious sulphate-free experience and whose hair needs both colour protection and intensive nourishment.

How to get the most out of your sulphate-free shampoo
Making the switch is step one. Here are a few things we tell clients to make sure it actually works:
Use lukewarm water, not hot. Hot water opens the cuticle just like sulphates do, which counteracts the point of using a gentler shampoo. Finishing with a cool rinse makes a noticeable difference to colour longevity and shine.
Don't wash too frequently. Coloured hair generally does better with less frequent washing — two to three times a week is ideal for most people. On days in between, a dry shampoo at the roots will freshen things up without any water near the colour.
Follow with a colour-safe conditioner. A sulphate-free shampoo paired with a matching conditioner gives you the best result. Most of the brands above have a conditioner in the same range formulated to work alongside the shampoo.
Use heat protection every time. Sulphate-free shampoo protects colour during washing. Heat protection spray protects it during styling. Both matter.
If your hair is also vegan-friendly certified, you might want to check out our range of vegan shampoos — many of our sulphate-free options are also fully vegan certified.
How long will my colour last with sulphate-free shampoo?
This varies depending on the type of colour, your natural hair colour, and how frequently you wash. As a general guide:
- Permanent colour typically lasts 6–8 weeks at the root regardless of shampoo, but vibrancy and shine throughout the lengths will noticeably last longer with a sulphate-free formula.
- Semi-permanent and tone-on-tone colour fades much faster — sulphate-free shampoo can meaningfully extend this from 4–6 washes to 10–15 washes depending on the formula.
- Vivid and fashion colours (pinks, purples, blues) are the most vulnerable to fade and benefit the most from a sulphate-free shampoo.

Frequently asked questions
Is sulphate-free shampoo better for coloured hair?
Yes. Sulphates strip colour pigment from the hair shaft every time you wash, which accelerates colour fade. Sulphate-free shampoos use gentler cleansing agents that clean the hair without lifting colour, helping your colour stay vibrant for significantly longer between salon visits.
Do sulphate-free shampoos still clean properly?
Yes — this is one of the most common misconceptions about sulphate-free haircare. Your hair will still get thoroughly clean; it just won't be stripped of its natural oils and colour at the same time. If anything, most people find their hair feels better conditioned after making the switch because the natural moisture balance is maintained.
How soon after colouring can I wash my hair?
We recommend waiting at least 48–72 hours after colouring before washing. This gives the colour time to oxidise and settle fully into the hair shaft. After that, using a sulphate-free shampoo every time will help maintain the result for as long as possible.
Can I use sulphate-free shampoo on uncoloured hair?
Absolutely. Sulphate-free shampoos are beneficial for all hair types, not just coloured hair. They're particularly good for dry hair, sensitive scalps, curly and wavy hair, hair extensions, and keratin-treated hair. There's really no hair type that benefits from sulphates.
What's the difference between sulphate-free and SLS-free?
They refer to the same thing. SLS stands for sodium lauryl sulphate, which is the most common sulphate used in shampoos. A shampoo labelled "SLS-free" or "sulphate-free" (also spelled "sulfate-free") has removed this and similar cleansing agents in favour of gentler alternatives.
How often should I wash colour-treated hair?
Two to three times a week is generally ideal for colour-treated hair. More frequent washing — even with a sulphate-free shampoo — will still fade colour faster than less frequent washing. On days between washes, a dry shampoo can refresh roots without affecting your colour.
