Round Brushes

A round brush is one of the most important tools in your blow-drying kit. The right one builds volume at the roots, adds smoothness through the lengths, and sets a curl or bend that holds long after you've put the dryer down. The wrong one tangles, drops the style by lunchtime, and makes blow-drying a chore. At Revive in Codsall we use round brushes on every blow-out, and we've put together this collection from three of the professional brands we trust most.

How to Choose the Right Round Brush

The right round brush comes down to three things: barrel size, bristle type, and hair type. Get those three matched and your blow-dry will look significantly more salon-finished without changing anything else about your routine.

  • Barrel size determines the curl shape. A small barrel (25-35mm) creates tighter curls and bigger volume at the roots. A large barrel (45-55mm) creates a smoother, straighter finish with soft body. As a rule, your barrel diameter should be roughly equal to the size of the curl or bend you want to set.
  • Bristle type affects smoothness and grip. Boar bristle is the salon gold standard for smoothing and shine. Nylon or synthetic bristles grip the hair more firmly and dry faster. Mixed bristle brushes give you both.
  • Vented or solid barrel? Vented (with holes through the barrel) lets hot air pass through, cutting drying time by up to 50%. Solid barrels hold heat for a smoother set but take longer. We recommend vented for daily use, solid for special-occasion blow-outs.

Pick by Barrel Size

If you already know what kind of blow-out you want, skip straight to the right size.

Pick by Hair Type

If you're not sure about size yet, here's the quick decision tree by hair type.

  • Fine or thin hair: Choose a smaller barrel (25-35mm) with boar bristle. The smaller the barrel, the more volume you'll build at the roots, which is what fine hair needs most. The Wetbrush Smooth & Shine 2.5" is built specifically for fine to medium hair, with a softer bristle pattern that grips without breaking strands. Pair with our shampoo for thin hair for a complete volume-focused routine.
  • Medium hair: A 35-45mm barrel works for most styles. The Moroccanoil and Paul Mitchell medium and large sizes are both excellent everyday picks.
  • Thick or coarse hair: Choose a larger barrel (45-55mm or 3-inch+) with firmer bristle. Thick hair needs more grip to manage the volume of strands. The Wetbrush Smooth & Shine 3" is purpose-built for thick and coarse hair.
  • Curly or wavy hair (wanting to smooth): A larger barrel (45-55mm) with firmer bristle helps stretch the curl into a smooth blow-out. Pair with our heat protection collection for any heat styling.
  • Anyone wanting faster drying: A vented brush like the Wetbrush Fast Dry Round Brush 2.5" cuts blow-dry time significantly. The square shape also adds extra grip and texture as it dries.

The Brands We Stock

We've curated this collection from three professional brands we've used and trusted for years. Each has its own strengths.

Moroccanoil Ceramic Round Brushes

The Moroccanoil ceramic round brush range is one of the most consistently recommended brushes in the industry. The ceramic-coated barrel distributes heat evenly, which means a smoother cuticle, less heat damage, and a glossier finish than uncoated brushes. The boar and nylon mixed bristles grip the hair firmly without pulling, and the lightweight handle makes longer styling sessions more comfortable. Available in 25mm, 35mm, 45mm and 55mm.

Paul Mitchell Express Ion Round Brushes

The Paul Mitchell Express Ion range uses ionic technology built into the barrel itself. Ions neutralise positive charges in damp hair, which means less frizz and faster drying. The result is a brush that genuinely shortens blow-dry time while improving the finish. Available in Small, Medium, Large and X-Large.

Wetbrush Round Brushes

Wetbrush built its reputation on detangling brushes designed for use on wet hair, and the brand has carried that gentle approach into its round brush range. The Smooth & Shine round brushes use Intelliflex bristles that flex with the hair rather than catching on it, making them genuinely kinder to fragile or fine hair. The Fast Dry Square Round Brush is a vented design that cuts drying time substantially.

How to Use a Round Brush Properly

A round brush only works as well as your technique. Here are the salon tips that make the biggest difference:

  • Start with damp, not soaking, hair. Towel-dry first and remove excess water, then rough-dry with a dryer until the hair is around 80% dry. The round brush comes in for the final 20% where the styling happens.
  • Always apply heat protection. A round brush plus a dryer is heat styling, so prep the hair first. Browse our heat protection collection for sprays, creams and serums.
  • Work in small sections. Smaller sections dry faster and let the brush set the shape properly. Big sections give patchy results.
  • Direct airflow downward along the shaft. Pointing the dryer nozzle down along the brush smooths the cuticle and adds shine. Pointing it up creates volume but also frizz.
  • Use the cool shot at the end. Once the section is dry, blast it with cool air while still wrapped around the brush. This sets the shape into the hair as it cools, which is the difference between a style that holds and one that drops within an hour.
  • Roll, don't pull. Wind the section around the brush and rotate from the root downward to the end. Don't tug.

Round Brush Care

A good round brush will last years if you look after it. Clean the bristles weekly to remove built-up product, hair and oil that otherwise gets re-deposited on freshly washed hair. A soft cleaning brush, warm soapy water and a thorough rinse is enough. Dry bristle-side down to stop water sitting in the barrel.

If you're building a complete styling kit, also look at our wider hair brushes collection for paddle brushes, detangling brushes and scalp brushes alongside.
