The honest bit first

No product mends a split end permanently. Once the cuticle has frayed and the hair has separated, the only thing that removes it is scissors. What a good treatment does is coat and bind the split together temporarily, smooth the cuticle so ends catch less and look tidier, and slow down how quickly the next ones appear. That is genuinely worth having, and it is the difference between trimming every six weeks and stretching it to twelve. Anything claiming to permanently repair damage is overselling.

Sealing serums and end creams

These are your day to day option, applied to towel dried or dry hair and concentrated on the last few inches only. Silicone based serums give the smoothest, glossiest finish and the most immediate visible improvement. Lighter oil based creams suit finer hair that would go limp under a heavier formula. Use less than you think, warm it between your palms first, and work upwards from the ends rather than downwards from the mid lengths.

Bond builders and intensive treatments

Bond building treatments work further inside the hair, strengthening the internal structure so ends are less likely to split in the first place. They are the more preventative approach and the one we would push harder if you colour or lighten your hair, since that is where most structural damage comes from. Used weekly alongside a sealing serum, the two do different jobs and complement each other well.

Stopping them coming back

Prevention beats treatment comfortably here. Heat protection before every hot tool, without exception. A lower dryer setting and a proper heat protection spray extends the life of your ends more than any treatment on this page. Swap a harsh brush for something gentler on wet hair, use a microfibre towel or an old t-shirt rather than rubbing with a bath towel, and keep hair off rough fabrics overnight if you can. Sun, chlorine and salt water all take their toll on ends too.
