Lip balms for everyday comfort

A good balm is the foundation of any lip routine. Ours range from light, barely there formulas that sit well under colour to richer, more cushioning textures for cold weather and windy days. If you want one recommendation above all others, it is the Moroccanoil lip balm. We are hairdressers rather than beauticians, so we do not use lip products on clients, but that particular balm has become a permanent fixture on the shelf in Codsall and the team buy it for themselves. The texture is beautifully smooth, the argan oil scent is subtle, and it never feels waxy or heavy.

Lip scrubs for a smoother base

Lip scrubs use fine, gentle exfoliants to buff away flaky-looking patches, leaving the surface feeling soft and looking more even. They are worth two minutes of your time before a matte lipstick in particular, as smoother lips give a much cleaner finish. Follow with a balm and let it settle before you apply colour.

Lipstick, gloss and liner

Choose your finish first. Matte lipsticks give the strongest colour payoff and a flat, modern look. Satin and cream formulas feel more comfortable for all-day wear and are far more forgiving. Glosses add shine and dimension, either on their own or layered over lipstick to soften the edges. Lip liners define the shape, stop colour travelling, and worn alone give a lovely blurred effect that suits almost everyone.

Choosing your shade

If you are unsure where to start, pick a shade a couple of tones deeper than your natural lip colour. It reads as polished without feeling like a statement, and it works with everything. Berries and warm browns tend to flatter most skin tones, while corals and soft pinks lift a summer look. Build a small collection of two or three shades you reach for often rather than a drawer full you never touch.
