How to Start Using Retinol
If you're new to retinol, start slowly: apply a pea-sized amount to clean, dry skin two to three evenings a week, and build up frequency as your skin adjusts. Mild dryness or flaking in the first few weeks is normal. Always follow with a moisturiser, and wear a broad-spectrum SPF every morning, as retinol can make skin more sensitive to sunlight. Most people begin to notice smoother, brighter-looking skin after 8–12 weeks of consistent use.
Retinol FAQs
What does retinol actually do for your skin?
Retinol is a vitamin A derivative that supports the skin's natural renewal process. With regular use it can help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, even out skin tone, refine texture and give skin a fresher, more radiant look.
Which Retinol product should I start with?
Beginners should start with a lower-strength, buffered formula such as the Anti-Aging Starter Kit or the Daily Moisturizer. Experienced users looking for stronger results can move up to the 6X Super Retinol Night Serum.
Can I use retinol and vitamin C together?
Yes – they're a popular pairing. Vitamin C brightens and helps protect against environmental stressors, while retinol targets lines and texture. Several products in this range, like the Retinol + Vitamin C Serum, combine both in one balanced formula. If using separate products, many people prefer vitamin C in the morning and retinol at night.
Should I use retinol in the morning or at night?
Night is best. Retinol can degrade in sunlight and may increase sun sensitivity, so apply it in the evening and use SPF 30+ during the day.
How long does retinol take to work?
Most people see initial improvements in skin brightness and texture within 4–8 weeks, with more visible results on fine lines after around 12 weeks of consistent use.
Is retinol suitable for sensitive skin?
Often yes, if introduced gradually. Start with one to two applications per week, use the "sandwich" method (moisturiser, retinol, moisturiser) and patch test first. If irritation persists, reduce frequency or switch to a gentler product such as the Eye Gel or sheet masks.
Can I use retinol while pregnant or breastfeeding?
Retinoids, including retinol, are generally not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Please consult your GP or midwife before use.
