What detox shampoo actually does

Even with a great everyday shampoo, residue gradually accumulates on your hair and scalp over time. Styling product build-up is the obvious one — hairspray, dry shampoo, mousse, oils and serums all leave traces that ordinary washing doesn't fully remove. But the bigger culprits for most people are mineral deposits from hard water (especially relevant across most of the UK), chlorine from swimming, and atmospheric pollution. All of these settle on the hair shaft and scalp, weighing the hair down, dulling shine, blocking colour absorption, and irritating the scalp. A clarifying detox shampoo lifts all of it cleanly in a single wash.

When you actually need a detox shampoo

This is properly useful in specific situations rather than as your everyday wash:

• Before a colour service. Build-up on the hair acts as a barrier between your colour and the hair shaft. A detox wash before a chemical service genuinely improves how the colour takes and how evenly it processes — most professional colourists will tell you the same thing.
• If your hair feels heavy, flat or dull. Particularly noticeable if your usual shampoo has stopped feeling like it cleans properly. That's almost always build-up rather than the shampoo itself.
• For swimmers. Chlorine binds to hair and causes damage, dryness and (for blondes) a green tint. Regular detox washing prevents the worst of it.
• For hard water areas. Mineral deposits make hair feel rough, dry and unmanageable. A monthly detox wash makes a noticeable difference.
• For heavy product users. If you use styling products daily, a weekly or fortnightly detox wash keeps the hair feeling its best.

Rose Water and Red Tea Extract

The two headline botanicals in this formula are properly chosen. Rose Water (Rosa Centifolia) has natural cleansing and balancing properties — it gently lifts impurities while regulating sebum on the scalp, which is what stops a clarifying shampoo from leaving the scalp feeling stripped or irritated. Red Tea Extract (Aspalathus Linearis, also known as Rooibos) brings powerful antioxidant support, protecting both hair and scalp from oxidative damage during the deep-cleanse process. Together they give you a thorough detox without the harshness that cheaper clarifying shampoos can cause.

Sulphate-free, but still genuinely deep-cleansing

This is one of the harder things to engineer in a detox formula. Most aggressive clarifiers rely on harsh sulphates (SLS or SLES) to strip build-up, which works but leaves the hair and scalp feeling completely raw. The Kitoko Detox uses gentler glucoside-based surfactants that still cleanse deeply but without that stripped-out feeling. Shea Butter and Vitamin E are blended in to leave the hair conditioned rather than dried out. Safe to use on colour-treated hair as long as you don't overdo it, and gentle enough that it won't fade your colour the way harsher clarifiers can.

How to use it

Massage gently into wet hair, lather well, and rinse thoroughly. Repeat if you've got significant build-up or it's been a while since your last clarifying wash. For most people, alternating this with your usual Kitoko shampoo (or another regular shampoo) every 1-2 weeks is the sweet spot. If you're using it before a colour service, follow the wash with a deep conditioning treatment to put moisture back into the hair before the colour goes on.
