How to Make Your Hair Style Last All Day: A Paul Mitchell Stylist's Guide

How to Make Your Hair Style Last All Day: A Paul Mitchell Stylist's Guide

Thomas Strangwood

You've washed your hair, dried it perfectly, and it looks exactly how you want it. Then two hours later, it's dropped, gone flat, or frizzed out entirely. Sound familiar?

Getting your style to actually last isn't about using more product or blasting it with hairspray until it's stiff. It's about using the right products in the right order. That's where Paul Mitchell Super Sculpt and Freeze and Shine come in. Two products that work well on their own, but work much better together. Here's how we use them in the salon to give clients all-day hold without the helmet-hair finish.

Why Styles Fall Throughout the Day

Before we get into the products, it's worth understanding why styles drop in the first place. In our experience at Revive in Codsall, it almost always comes down to one of three things:

  • No internal structure. If hair isn't styled with a product during the blow-dry, there's nothing holding the shape from the inside out. You're relying entirely on heat to set the hair, and heat alone doesn't have a long memory.
  • Humidity and moisture. Hair absorbs moisture from the air, which softens any hold and causes styles to relax, drop or frizz. The British weather makes this worse than most clients realise.
  • Finishing too late. Applying hairspray after the style has already cooled and set means the spray is sitting on the surface rather than locking anything in. It looks fine for the first hour, then the underlying style starts to give way.

The fix is a two-step approach: build the structure into the hair while you style, then seal it in when you're done.

Step One: Paul Mitchell Super Sculpt, the Styling Foundation

Paul Mitchell Super Sculpt Styling Glaze 250ml

Paul Mitchell Super Sculpt Styling Glaze is a lightweight styling product designed to be used on damp hair before blow-drying. Think of it as giving your hair a framework. It adds control and flexible hold during the styling process itself, so your finished style has structure worked into it rather than applied on afterwards.

It works particularly well for:

  • Smooth, sleek blowouts and polished styles
  • Straightening or flat-ironing (it includes heat protection)
  • Anyone who wants a defined finish that still looks natural
  • Hair that tends to lose its shape or go frizzy as the day goes on

Crucially, Super Sculpt dries to a flexible finish, not a stiff or crunchy one. This matters more than most people realise. Flexible hold responds better to being shaped and moved, and it genuinely lasts longer than hard, brittle hold which tends to crack and crumble through the day. You can also build the level of hold by applying a little more product, which makes it versatile across hair types.

Stylist tip: Apply Super Sculpt to towel-dried hair (damp, not soaking), distribute evenly with a wide-tooth comb, and blow-dry in sections. The more thoroughly you dry each section before moving to the next, the more defined and long-lasting your finish will be. Releasing the brush before the section is fully dry is the single biggest reason home blow-outs don't last.

Which Size of Super Sculpt Should You Buy?

The 250ml Super Sculpt Styling Glaze is the standard size and the right pick if you're buying it for the first time or styling a few times a week. It lasts most people three to five months and fits neatly into a dressing table setup.

The 500ml Super Sculpt Styling Glaze is the better value pick for daily users, longer or thicker hair, or anyone styling every day. The price per ml drops substantially compared to the 250ml. We use this size in the salon and it's the best buy if you already know you like the product.

For Firmer Hold: Paul Mitchell Super Clean Sculpting Gel

Paul Mitchell Super Clean Sculpting Gel 150ml

If your hair is thicker, more textured, or you want a firmer, sleeker finish, Paul Mitchell Super Clean Sculpting Gel is the alternative starting point. It's a clear, firm-hold gel rather than a glaze, which means a heavier hold and a more sculpted finish. Where Super Sculpt is built around flexibility, Super Clean is built around control.

It suits:

  • Slicked-back styles and wet-look finishes
  • Hair types that don't hold a flexible-glaze style for long
  • Defined parts, sharp lines and structured shapes
  • Men's styling, particularly mid-length cuts that need shape

How to choose between them: If you want a soft, natural-looking blowout that lasts the day, go with Super Sculpt. If you want a sharper, more defined or sleeker look, or if your hair is heavy and resists holding shape, go with Super Clean Sculpting Gel. The two products aren't competing, they're built for different finishes.

Step Two: Paul Mitchell Freeze and Shine, the Lasting Finish

Paul Mitchell Freeze and Shine Super Spray 500ml

Once your style is set, Paul Mitchell Freeze and Shine Super Spray locks it in place. It's a firm-hold finishing spray that does two things most hairsprays don't manage at once: it holds strongly without going stiff, and it adds a glossy, healthy-looking shine rather than dulling the hair down.

It's ideal for:

  • Locking in a finished blowout or set style
  • Keeping frizz and flyaways under control all day
  • Special occasions where the style needs to last from morning to midnight
  • Anyone who finds regular hairsprays leave hair feeling tacky, dusty or coated

The shine factor is genuinely one of Freeze and Shine's standout qualities. A lot of firm-hold sprays leave hair looking flat or coated. This one adds a polish that makes styled hair look intentional and healthy rather than over-worked. The 50% VOC formula dries cleanly and stays brushable, so you can refresh through the day without rewashing.

Stylist tip: Hold the bottle 25cm to 30cm from your hair and spray in short bursts rather than one continuous stream. For flyaways specifically, spray a small amount onto your palm first and smooth lightly over the surface. This gives far more control than spraying directly onto fine baby hairs, which usually just lifts them up.

If you want to dig deeper into Freeze and Shine specifically (sizes, technique, comparisons), we've covered it in detail in our Paul Mitchell Freeze and Shine Super Spray guide.

How to Use Them Together: The Full Routine

The real magic happens when Super Sculpt and Freeze and Shine work as a pair. Here's the routine we recommend for all-day hold:

  1. Wash and towel dry. Blot the hair gently rather than rubbing. Rough-towelling roughens the cuticle and causes mid-style frizz later. Hair should be damp, not dripping.
  2. Apply Super Sculpt. Work a small amount through the mid-lengths and ends, focusing on where you want the most control. For a fuller-hold finish, apply slightly more or switch to Super Clean Sculpting Gel.
  3. Blow-dry in sections. Use a round brush for a classic blowout, or a flat brush for a sleeker, straighter finish. Dry each section fully before releasing the brush. Use the cool shot at the end of each section to set the hair while it's in shape.
  4. Finish with straighteners or tongs if needed. Super Sculpt's built-in heat protection means it's safe to use heat tools over the top of it. No separate heat protectant needed for normal styling temperatures.
  5. Spray with Freeze and Shine. Once your style is exactly how you want it, finish with a light all-over spray. Avoid over-applying. A few light passes give better hold than a heavy soak.

Total styling time: 15 to 20 minutes. Hold time: all day.

Getting the Most Out of Your Hold

A few extra habits that make a real difference to how long your style actually lasts:

  • Don't touch your hair while it's cooling. Hair sets as it cools, so running your hands through it while it's still warm from the dryer breaks down the hold before it's had a chance to form properly. Even gently checking it can disturb the set.
  • Use lower heat settings. High heat can over-soften the hair too quickly, leaving the cuticle unable to lock into shape. A medium heat with a cool-shot at the end of each section is more effective for lasting hold than blasting the hair on high.
  • Start with clean hair. Styling products work better on freshly cleansed hair. Build-up from previous days can prevent products from absorbing and bonding properly with the hair. If you're using a lot of styling products regularly, a clarifying shampoo once a week is a good reset.
  • Less is more with hairspray. Applying too much makes the hair heavy, which causes styles to drop faster rather than slower. Two or three light bursts from the right distance is almost always better than a close-range soak.
  • Mind your pillowcase the night before. If you're styling for an event, a silk or satin pillowcase the night before keeps your starting condition smoother. Cotton can rough up the cuticle and add to frizz from your first wash onwards.

All-Day Style FAQs

Can I use Super Sculpt and Freeze and Shine together every day?

Yes, both products are designed for regular use and won't cause buildup at the levels you'd actually apply. If your hair starts to feel weighted after a few weeks, a clarifying shampoo once a week clears the slate. For everyday styling, the two-product routine is one of the gentler ways to get serious hold without harsh ingredients.

Do I need to use a heat protectant if I'm using Super Sculpt?

No, Super Sculpt includes heat protection in the formula, so you can use straighteners or curling tongs over the top without layering a separate heat protectant underneath. If you're styling at very high temperatures (above 200°C) regularly, layering with a dedicated heat protectant from our heat protection collection would give extra peace of mind, but for normal styling temperatures Super Sculpt covers it.

Will Freeze and Shine make my hair feel sticky?

No, not at the right distance. The 50% VOC formula dries cleanly and stays brushable. If you spray too close (under 15cm) you can get a sticky finish, but at the recommended 25cm to 30cm distance the result is smooth and touchable. Build hold with multiple light passes, not one heavy spray.

What's the difference between Super Sculpt and Super Clean Sculpting Gel?

Super Sculpt is a flexible-hold styling glaze designed to be applied before blow-drying for a soft, natural-looking finish with structure built in. Super Clean Sculpting Gel is a firmer-hold clear gel for sleeker, more defined styles, wet-look finishes and sculpted shapes. Different finishes, different jobs. Most clients use one or the other, not both.

Can I use this routine on curly or wavy hair?

Yes, with a small adjustment. For curls and waves, apply Super Sculpt to damp hair, then diffuse or air-dry rather than blow-drying with a brush. The flexible hold sets into the curl pattern without flattening it. Finish with a light spray of Freeze and Shine once dry, focusing on the canopy rather than soaking the lengths.

How long should a 250ml of Super Sculpt last?

For most people styling three or four times a week, a 250ml lasts three to five months. Daily users will go through it faster, which is where the 500ml represents better value. Hair length and thickness also affect usage rate, so longer or coarser hair will need slightly more per application.

What if my style still drops by lunchtime even with this routine?

Usually one of three things: not enough product (try slightly more next time), not drying each section fully before releasing the brush, or skipping the cool-shot to set the hair while it's in shape. Reapply the technique focusing on those three points and the difference is usually obvious. If hair is very fine and still drops, look at our how to add volume to fine hair guide for an adjusted approach using Extra Body Root Boost and Sculpting Foam alongside Super Sculpt.
