Full cover or half well

Full cover tips sit across the whole nail plate and are the quicker option, which makes them popular for press-on style sets and for anyone working to a tight turnaround. Half well tips only cover the free edge and blend into the natural nail at the stress point, giving a more seamless result once buffed and overlaid. Half well takes longer to prep but tends to look better up close, so most pros keep both in the kit.

Choosing a shape

Square and squoval remain the everyday workhorses and suit shorter lengths well. Coffin and ballerina tips give that tapered, straight-edged look that photographs beautifully and holds nail art without crowding. Stiletto and almond narrow to a point, which flatters longer nail beds but needs a strong overlay behind it. If you are stocking up rather than buying for one set, a mixed box across sizes zero to nine saves a lot of hunting for the right fit later.

Clear, natural or white

Clear tips disappear under coloured gel or acrylic and are the safest all-rounder. Natural tips carry a subtle tint that softens the join if your blending is not perfect yet. White tips are made for the classic French, letting you skip painting the smile line entirely and simply overlay clear on top.

What you will need alongside them

Tips are only half the job. You will want nail glue or resin to bond them, a tip cutter to bring the length down before shaping, and an acrylic or gel system to overlay and strengthen the finished nail. Size each tip to the natural nail before you glue, as one that is too narrow will lift at the sidewalls far sooner than one sized correctly.
