Plate Size Guide
Standard plates (around 25mm/1 inch) suit most people. They're versatile enough for creating curls, flicks, and waves as well as straight styles. Wide plates (38-42mm/1.5-2 inches) are faster on long or thick hair but less manoeuvrable for short styles or creating curls. Narrow plates (13-25mm) are best for short hair, fringes, or getting close to roots, but painfully slow on long hair.
Temperature Considerations
Fine, damaged, or colour-treated hair: 150-180°C. Normal or virgin hair: 180-200°C. Thick, coarse, or very curly hair: 200-230°C. If you straighten daily, use the lowest temperature that works rather than defaulting to maximum. The damage is cumulative - 365 days at 230°C versus 365 days at 180°C makes a visible difference to hair condition over a year.
Do You Need Adjustable Temperature?
If everyone using the straighteners has similar hair type, fixed temperature (like ghd) is fine and removes the temptation to crank it up unnecessarily. If multiple people with different hair types share the straighteners, adjustable temperature is essential. Also useful if you have different hair textures on your head - many people have finer hair at the front and coarser hair at the back.
Titanium vs Ceramic Plates
Titanium heats faster, conducts heat more evenly, and lasts longer under professional use. It's also smoother, so hair glides better. Ceramic is gentler (produces negative ions that supposedly reduce frizz), cheaper, and perfectly adequate for home use. If you're a hairstylist straightening 10+ heads daily, titanium pays for itself. If you straighten your own hair 2-3 times weekly, ceramic is fine.
Heat Protection Is Essential
Straighteners work by temporarily breaking and reforming hydrogen bonds in hair using heat. This is inherently damaging. Always use a heat protection spray before straightening - it creates a barrier that reduces direct heat damage and moisture loss.
