How to Use BOUNCE.ME Curl Mousse for Defined, Frizz-Free Curls

Thomas Strangwood

You know that feeling when you leave the salon and your curls look absolutely perfect, defined, bouncy and frizz-free? That's exactly what the DESIGNME BOUNCE.ME Curl Mousse is designed to give you at home, on every wash day, without the salon price tag.

If you're after weightless curl definition, hydration without heaviness, and proper 48-hour frizz control, this is the product your curl routine has been missing. No crunch, no flakes, no stiffness. Just defined curls with a flexible hold that stay soft, bouncy and full of movement. We've used and sold BOUNCE.ME at Revive in Codsall for years, and the Curl Mousse is the product we get asked about most often. Here's the proper salon guide to using it.

Why BOUNCE.ME Curl Mousse Works on Curls

DESIGNME BOUNCE.ME Curl Mousse 255ml

DESIGNME BOUNCE.ME Curl Mousse has a lightweight foam texture that coats each strand without weighing it down. It enhances your natural curl pattern, builds volume, and provides flexible hold without leaving the hair stiff or crunchy. Modern mousses have come a long way from the crunchy 1990s versions a lot of people remember, and this formula is a long way ahead.

It's alcohol-free, CGM-approved (curly girl method) and suitable for daily use. It works across the full curl spectrum from loose 2A waves through to tighter 4B coils, and works especially well on medium to coarse hair textures. It also layers beautifully with the rest of the DESIGNME BOUNCE.ME range for compounding results.

What's Actually Inside the Bottle

The mousse isn't just styling, it's nourishing too. The key actives:

  • Vitamin E: Works as an antioxidant to protect the hair from environmental stress and adds natural shine.
  • Panthenol (Pro-Vitamin B5): Provides lightweight hydration to keep curls soft and smooth without heaviness or buildup. Panthenol is one of the most reliable moisture-binders in haircare.
  • Sunflower Seed Extract: Seals moisture into the strand and strengthens hair, helping it resist frizz and humidity through the day.
  • Curluxe Shield Technology: The star of the formula. This plant-based system, powered by guar gum, locks in curl shape, maintains bounce and blocks humidity for up to 48 hours without any of the stiffness traditional gels give.

The combination is what gives BOUNCE.ME Curl Mousse its reputation for both definition and softness in the same product, which is genuinely rare in curl styling.

Who BOUNCE.ME Curl Mousse Is For

It's designed for all curl types and most hair textures. Whether your hair needs more definition, more volume or better frizz control, this mousse fits into any curl routine. It works especially well for:

  • Wavy hair (2A to 2C) that wants volume and soft definition without weight
  • Curly hair (3A to 3C) looking for shape, hydration and frizz control all in one product
  • Coily hair (4A to 4B) that benefits from added structure and long-lasting moisture support
  • Fine, medium or coarse textures that want flexible, non-stiff hold throughout the day

It's less ideal for the very tightest coily textures (4C) that respond better to butter or cream-based stylers for heavier moisture, though it can still be used as a top layer over a richer leave-in. For richer options, browse our wider curly hair collection.

How to Use BOUNCE.ME Curl Mousse: Step by Step

How you apply the mousse is the difference between curls that look defined and bouncy all day, and curls that fall flat by lunchtime. Here's how we apply it on clients at the salon.

Step 1: Start With Properly Damp Hair

The mousse works best on damp hair. Not soaking wet (where the water dilutes the product before it can set), not nearly dry (where there's no water to activate the formula). After washing with the BOUNCE.ME Curl Shampoo and BOUNCE.ME Curl Conditioner, gently blot the hair with a microfibre towel or a cotton T-shirt to remove excess water. The hair should feel wet to the touch but not actively dripping.

Step 2: Shake and Dispense

Give the can a proper shake (a few seconds, not a quick flick) before dispensing, since the active ingredients need to be mixed evenly through the foam. Dispense a palmful into your hands. Always start with less than you think you need and add more as you go. For longer or thicker hair, work in two rounds rather than trying to apply everything at once, which usually leaves the front of the hair coated and the back undertreated.

Step 3: Apply Section by Section

This is the step that separates good results from great ones. Don't just slap the mousse on the front of your hair and call it done. Work in proper sections, applying from roots to ends and then scrunching upward to shape the curls. Make sure the mousse reaches everywhere, including the back of the head and the underside at the nape of your neck, which are the spots most commonly under-treated and where curls lose definition first.

If you're brushing through to distribute, use a wide-tooth comb or detangling brush, not a regular paddle brush. Curls bruise easily when wet, and the wrong brush is how mid-shaft frizz starts.

Step 4: Dry Your Curls (Without Disturbing Them)

You have two good options here. Air-drying gives softer, more natural-looking definition and works well if you have the time (allow 1 to 3 hours depending on hair length and density). Diffusing gives more volume, bounce and a faster finish.

If diffusing:

  • Set your dryer to low heat and medium airflow. High heat causes frizz and over-dries the curls.
  • Let sections sit inside the diffuser bowl rather than moving the diffuser around constantly. The "hover and lift" technique keeps the curl pattern intact.
  • Don't touch the hair with your fingers while it's drying. The single biggest cause of frizz on curly hair is fidgeting with it mid-dry.

Step 5: Scrunch Out the Cast

Once the hair is fully dry, you'll notice a slight cast, that thin, firm layer the mousse forms as it sets. This is normal. It's a sign the product has done its job. Gently scrunch sections of hair upward in your palms to break the cast. The cast disappears, the curls drop into soft, bouncy definition, and the hold underneath stays intact.

Don't skip this step or you'll think the mousse is too crunchy. Do it properly and you'll wonder how you ever styled curls without it.

Style It Your Way: Tips for Every Curl Goal

The basic routine above gives reliable results. A few small adjustments shift the finish:

  • For more root volume: Flip your head upside down while diffusing and focus on the roots first. This lifts the hair away from the scalp as it dries and gives a fuller, more voluminous finish from the root down.
  • For tighter curl definition: After applying the mousse, finger-coil individual sections one by one before drying. The smaller the section, the tighter and more defined the resulting curl. Let them dry completely before touching.
  • For soft, fluffy curls: Once the hair is fully dry, use your fingers or a wide-tooth comb to gently separate the curls and lightly fluff the roots. This loosens the curl pattern just enough to give a soft, full finish without losing definition.
  • For reviving curls midweek: Lightly mist the hair with water from a spray bottle, then scrunch a small amount of mousse through the lengths. Your curls will look and feel like wash day without the wash.

How to Layer the Full BOUNCE.ME Curl Routine

If you want salon-finish curls every wash day, layering is the way. The full BOUNCE.ME system works best together:

  1. Wash with BOUNCE.ME Curl Shampoo. Sulphate-free, gentle, designed not to strip the cuticle and start the wash day with frizz already built in.
  2. Condition with BOUNCE.ME Curl Conditioner. Apply to mid-lengths and ends, detangle in the shower with your fingers or a wide-tooth comb, leave for two to three minutes, then rinse with cool water. The cool rinse adds extra shine and helps the cuticle lie flat (we covered the science behind that in our cold water rinse guide).
  3. Apply BOUNCE.ME Curl Mousse to damp hair using the step-by-step above.
  4. Finish with BOUNCE.ME Spray Gel if you want extra hold and humidity protection. Spritz over the mousse before drying. Especially worth doing for long days, humid weather, or curl types that need stronger structure.
  5. Dry without disturbing and scrunch out the cast once fully dry.

Common Curl Mousse Mistakes (And How to Avoid Them)

Most disappointing mousse results come from one of these issues. If your curls aren't behaving the way they should, run through this list before changing products:

  • Applying to hair that's too wet. Soaking-wet hair dilutes the mousse before it can set. Blot with a microfibre towel until the hair is damp, not dripping.
  • Applying to hair that's too dry. The opposite problem. Mousse needs water in the hair to activate properly. If you've waited too long, mist the hair with water to re-dampen before applying.
  • Using too much product. A palmful is plenty for most hair lengths. Too much mousse creates buildup, weight and a stiffer finish. Always start with less.
  • Skipping the back of the head. The nape and crown are easy to miss and often the spots where curls lose definition. Make sure you're applying systematically, not just where you can see.
  • Touching the hair while it dries. Frizz is almost always caused by fingers running through damp curls. Apply, walk away, come back when it's done.
  • Skipping the scrunch-out step. If you leave the cast on, you'll think the product is too crunchy. Always scrunch the cast out once fully dry.
  • Using high heat on the diffuser. Curls dry beautifully on low and medium heat. High heat causes frizz and dehydration.

BOUNCE.ME Curl Mousse FAQs

Do I apply BOUNCE.ME Curl Mousse to damp or dry hair?

Damp hair, every time. For best results, apply to clean hair that's been gently blotted with a microfibre towel or cotton T-shirt. Damp (not soaking, not dry) is the sweet spot for even distribution and proper activation of the Curluxe Shield Technology.

How much mousse should I use?

Start with a palmful and add more as needed. Fine or low-density hair often needs less. Thicker, longer or tighter curl types may need two rounds for even coverage. The rule is always under-apply first, then build, because more is much easier than less.

Can I layer BOUNCE.ME Curl Mousse over a leave-in conditioner?

Yes, and it works brilliantly. Apply your leave-in first to damp hair, then layer the mousse on top. The leave-in adds moisture and slip, the mousse adds definition and hold. Just use slightly less of each to avoid product buildup. Browse our leave-in conditioner collection for options that pair well.

What's the difference between BOUNCE.ME Curl Mousse and the Spray Gel?

BOUNCE.ME Curl Mousse provides more lift, bounce and movement, with a softer, more touchable hold. The BOUNCE.ME Spray Gel gives firmer hold and stronger humidity resistance, but with less natural bounce. Many clients use both: mousse first for volume, spray gel on top for hold. They're designed to layer.

Can I re-wet my hair and reapply mousse to refresh curls between washes?

Absolutely. Lightly mist your curls with water from a spray bottle, then apply a small amount of mousse to reshape and reactivate bounce. This is one of the easiest ways to make a wash day stretch to day three or four without rewashing.

What curl types is BOUNCE.ME Curl Mousse best for?

Waves, curls and coils from 2A to 4B. The mousse adds lift and bounce to looser textures while defining and controlling frizz in tighter curl patterns. For the very tightest coily textures (4C) that need heavier moisture, layering BOUNCE.ME Curl Mousse over a richer leave-in or pairing it with a curl cream gives better results than the mousse alone.

Why do my curls feel crunchy after using mousse?

That crunch is the cast forming as the mousse dries, and it's completely normal. The cast is actually doing the work, locking your curl shape in. Wait until your hair is fully dry, then gently scrunch the cast out with your hands. The crunch disappears, the curls drop into soft definition, and the hold underneath stays intact. Skipping this step is the most common reason people give up on mousse too soon.

Is BOUNCE.ME Curl Mousse vegan and cruelty-free?

Yes to both. DESIGNME is fully vegan and cruelty-free across the whole BOUNCE.ME range, alongside being alcohol-free, sulphate-free and curly girl method approved. If those things matter to you, this is one of the cleaner curl ranges on the professional market.
