DESIGNME BOUNCE.ME Curl Routine: Shampoo, Conditioner, Mousse or Gel?
Thomas StrangwoodShare
Ever scrolled through curl styling products for so long that you ended up more confused than when you started, still not knowing whether your hair needs a mousse, a spray gel, or just a proper conditioner? You're not alone. With so many curl products on the market and so much conflicting advice online, it's hard to know where to begin.
The DESIGNME BOUNCE.ME range solves this by being designed as a system rather than a collection of individual products. The shampoo, conditioner, mousse and spray gel are all built to work together, and once you understand what each one is actually doing, building your routine is genuinely straightforward. We've worked with curly hair clients at Revive in Codsall for nearly two decades, and BOUNCE.ME is one of the curl ranges we recommend most often because it covers the whole wash-and-style process without needing to mix brands.
Here's the proper salon breakdown of what each BOUNCE.ME product does, who it's for, and how to layer them.
Why Curly Hair Needs a Curl-Specific Routine
Before getting into the products, it helps to know why curly hair needs different products from straight hair in the first place.
Curls dehydrate faster than straight hair because the natural oils your scalp produces struggle to travel down a coiled or wavy strand. That means even healthy curls run dry by default. Curls also lift the cuticle along the bends in each strand, which makes them more prone to frizz, more sensitive to humidity, and more likely to tangle in the shower. Anything you use needs to address all three things: hydration, definition and humidity protection.
Standard "all hair types" products simply don't do this. A curl-specific routine does. The four BOUNCE.ME products below each handle a different part of the job.
Step 1: DESIGNME BOUNCE.ME Curl Shampoo
The foundation of any curl routine is the wash. DESIGNME BOUNCE.ME Curl Shampoo is a sulphate-free cleanser formulated specifically for wavy, curly and coily hair. The sulphate-free part matters here because standard shampoos use stronger detergents that strip the cuticle and leave curls drier, duller and more prone to frizz before you've even started styling. BOUNCE.ME Curl Shampoo cleanses thoroughly but gently, removing buildup and oil without dehydrating the hair.
Best for: All curl types from waves (2A) to coils (4C). Anyone who wants to wash without stripping moisture out of their curls.
How to use: Wet hair thoroughly with lukewarm water (not hot, which over-stimulates the scalp and roughens the cuticle). Apply a generous amount to the scalp, working in gently with your fingertips for 60 seconds. The lather will rinse through the lengths as it runs down. Avoid rough scrubbing of the lengths themselves, which is one of the biggest causes of mid-shaft frizz on curls.

Step 2: DESIGNME BOUNCE.ME Curl Conditioner
DESIGNME BOUNCE.ME Curl Conditioner is the moisture step that curls genuinely can't skip. Curly hair needs more conditioning than straight hair because the cuticle along each curl naturally lifts and lets moisture escape faster. This conditioner uses lightweight conditioning agents and curl-specific hydrating actives that detangle properly without weighing curls down or flattening their shape.
Crucially, it's also brilliant as a co-wash for clients following the curly girl method. Co-washing means skipping shampoo on some wash days and using conditioner alone to gently cleanse and hydrate, which suits drier curl types beautifully.
Best for: Daily conditioning after the BOUNCE.ME Curl Shampoo, co-washing between cleanse days, or as a standalone hydrator on dehydrated curls. Suits curl types 2A through 4C.
How to use: After washing, gently squeeze excess water from your hair. Apply a generous amount to the mid-lengths and ends only (never the roots on curls, as it weighs them down). Detangle gently with your fingers or a wide-tooth comb or detangling brush while the conditioner is still in. Leave for two to three minutes to let the hydrating actives penetrate, then rinse with cool water. Leave a small amount in for added slip if your hair is particularly thirsty.
The 50ml size is also brilliant for travel or for trying the product before committing to a larger size.
Step 3 (Volume Route): DESIGNME BOUNCE.ME Curl Mousse
Once your hair is washed and conditioned, the styling decision begins. DESIGNME BOUNCE.ME Curl Mousse is the volume hero of the range. It's a lightweight foam that spreads easily through damp hair, dries quickly, and gives curls a lifted, bouncy, defined finish without the heaviness you sometimes get with curl creams. It's also alcohol-free, which matters because alcohol in older mousse formulas was the ingredient most responsible for the dry, crunchy reputation mousses used to have. Modern formulas like this one are a long way from that.
The mousse delivers 48-hour frizz and humidity protection, which makes a real difference in British weather where the morning forecast is rarely the afternoon reality.
Best for: Fine to medium curls (2A to 3A typically) that need volume and bounce more than heavy moisture. Anyone whose curls start out looking great in the morning but lose their lift by midday.
How to use: Shake well and dispense a palmful into your hands. Apply to towel-dried, damp hair section by section, scrunching upward from ends to roots as you go. Twist or finger-coil sections for extra definition, then either air-dry or diffuse on low heat. Once fully dry, gently scrunch out any cast with your hands to release soft, bouncy curls. Don't be tempted to scrunch out the crunch while the hair is still damp — that breaks the hold before it has set.
Step 3 (Hold Route): DESIGNME BOUNCE.ME Spray Gel
DESIGNME BOUNCE.ME Spray Gel is the long-lasting hold and frizz-protection finisher. It sits between a mousse and a traditional gel in terms of feel — firmer hold than a mousse, but without the heaviness or crunch of a traditional gel. The spray format also makes it much easier to distribute evenly than a tub gel, where it's all too easy to apply too much to one section and not enough to the next.
It's a brilliant choice for curls that need to last through a full day, a workout, or a humid afternoon. The thermal protection up to 400°F means you can also use it on refresh days when you're diffusing or heat-styling, not just on fresh wash days.
Best for: All curl types that need long-lasting definition and humidity protection, especially tighter curls (3B and beyond) where structure matters more than volume.
How to use: Spritz evenly over damp hair in sections, lifting each section so the spray reaches underneath as well as the surface. Shape your curls with your fingers, then either air-dry or diffuse. Apply it as the last layering step if you're using mousse or conditioner before it.
Mousse vs Spray Gel: How to Choose
This is the question we get asked most often when clients are starting with BOUNCE.ME. The honest answer:
- Choose the Curl Mousse if your priority is volume, lift, bounce and movement. The mousse delivers all-day definition without weight, so it suits fine and medium curl types best.
- Choose the Spray Gel if your priority is hold, structure and humidity resistance. The spray gel locks the curl pattern firmly in place, so it suits tighter curls and coils, longer days, and tougher weather conditions.
- Choose both if you want the best of both worlds. Apply the mousse first for volume, then layer the spray gel over the top for hold. This is the routine we recommend for clients who want curls that stay defined and bouncy all day.
How to Build the Full BOUNCE.ME Routine
The system works best when used together. Here's the full routine, step by step:
- Wash with BOUNCE.ME Curl Shampoo. Lukewarm water, focus on the scalp, let the lather rinse through the lengths.
- Condition with BOUNCE.ME Curl Conditioner. Mid-lengths and ends only, detangle in the shower with fingers or a wide-tooth comb, leave for two minutes, then rinse with cool water. The cool rinse genuinely matters here for the shine and frizz benefits.
- Towel dry gently. Press the hair with a microfibre towel or cotton T-shirt rather than rubbing. Rough-towelling causes mid-style frizz that no styling product will fix.
-
Choose your styler:
- For volume and bounce: Apply BOUNCE.ME Curl Mousse to damp hair, scrunching upward from ends to roots.
- For hold and humidity protection: Spritz BOUNCE.ME Spray Gel through damp hair, lifting each section as you go.
- For both: Mousse first, then spray gel over the top.
- Dry without disturbing. Air-dry, plop into a microfibre towel for 20 to 30 minutes, or diffuse on low heat. Don't touch the curls while they're drying — the single biggest cause of frizz is fingers running through damp curls.
- Scrunch out the crunch. Once fully dry, gently scrunch with your palms to break the styling cast. The curls drop into soft, defined shape underneath.

Refreshing BOUNCE.ME Curls on Day Two and Beyond
Wash day is the easy bit. Days two, three and four are where most curl routines fall apart. With BOUNCE.ME, refreshing curls is straightforward:
- Lightly mist the hair with water from a spray bottle, focusing on any flattened or frizzy sections.
- Apply a small amount of BOUNCE.ME Spray Gel to the dampened areas, scrunching as you go to reactivate the curl pattern.
- Let dry naturally or use a diffuser briefly. By day three, your curls look fresher than they would on day one with most other routines.
Who BOUNCE.ME Suits (and Who It Doesn't)
The range works for:
- Wavy, curly and coily hair from 2A to 4C
- Anyone looking for a sulphate-free, vegan and cruelty-free curl routine
- Curly girl method (CGM) followers
- Clients who want a complete curl system from one brand rather than mixing
- Anyone whose curls feel either too dry or too frizzy with their current routine
The range is less ideal for:
- Bone-straight hair (the products are designed around curl structure)
- Anyone who specifically needs heavy moisture for very coarse, dry coily hair (you may want to layer with a richer leave-in or oil)
- Curls that respond best to butter-based or heavier cream stylers (BOUNCE.ME leans lightweight)

BOUNCE.ME Curl Routine FAQs
Is BOUNCE.ME suitable for all curl types?
Yes. The range is formulated for curl types 2A (loose waves) through 4C (tightest coils). The shampoo, conditioner and spray gel work equally well across the range. The mousse leans slightly more towards finer and looser curls (2A to 3A) where its lightweight foam delivers volume best, while the spray gel suits tighter curls (3B to 4C) where structural hold matters more. Most clients with curls in between find both work well.
Is DESIGNME BOUNCE.ME alcohol-free and curly-girl-method approved?
Yes. The Curl Mousse specifically is alcohol-free and CGM-approved, which is a meaningful difference from older mousse formulas that contained drying alcohol. The shampoo is sulphate-free, the whole range is vegan and cruelty-free, and the system is built around the curl-friendly principles that the CGM community looks for.
Can I use BOUNCE.ME Curl Conditioner as a co-wash?
Yes, this is one of its strengths. On non-shampoo days, work the conditioner through wet hair, massage gently into the scalp, leave for two to three minutes, then rinse. Co-washing suits drier curl types particularly well and keeps the lengths hydrated between proper shampoo days.
Does the BOUNCE.ME Curl Mousse damage hair?
No. The most common ingredient that gave older mousses their bad reputation was alcohol, and BOUNCE.ME Curl Mousse is alcohol-free. The formula is designed to hydrate and condition while it styles, so used as directed, it supports the hair rather than damaging it.
What's the difference between BOUNCE.ME Curl Mousse and BOUNCE.ME Spray Gel?
The Curl Mousse is a lightweight foam that adds volume, bounce and soft definition. It suits fine to medium curls that need lift. The Spray Gel is a lightweight liquid spray that adds firmer hold and humidity protection. It suits all curl types but is especially good for tighter curls and longer-lasting structure. Many clients use both, mousse first for volume and spray gel over the top for hold.
Can I use BOUNCE.ME products with heat tools?
Yes. The BOUNCE.ME Spray Gel offers thermal protection up to 400°F, so it's safe for use under diffusers, curling tongs or other heat tools at normal styling temperatures. For very high-heat styling on a regular basis, you may want to layer with a dedicated heat protectant from our heat protection collection for additional cover.
How long does each BOUNCE.ME product last?
For a typical curl client washing two to three times a week, the 300ml shampoo and the matching conditioner sizes last about three to four months. The 255ml mousse and 230ml spray gel typically last two to three months depending on hair length and how much you use per application. The 50ml conditioner is a travel and trial size designed for shorter use or as a tester before committing to the full size.
