How To Stop Frizzy Hair
Thomas StrangwoodShare
Frizzy hair is the single most common complaint we hear in the salon, especially once the British summer rolls around and the humidity starts climbing. The frustrating thing is that most people are treating the symptom rather than the cause, which is why the products they buy either do not work or only work for about five minutes before the frizz comes back.
This guide explains what actually causes frizzy hair, the two very different types of frizz most people do not know about, and which products will genuinely stop it. Everything here is based on what we actually use on real clients at Revive Hair Artists, not what we have been told to recommend.
What actually causes frizzy hair
Frizz happens when the cuticle (the outer layer of your hair) is lifted or damaged, allowing moisture from the surrounding air to enter the hair shaft. When that moisture gets in, it causes the inner hair to swell unevenly, and the result is that messy, fuzzy, halo-of-fluff look that we all recognise.
There are a few different reasons the cuticle might be lifted in the first place. Genuinely dry hair with low moisture content naturally has a more porous, lifted cuticle. Damaged hair from bleaching, colouring, heat styling, or chemical treatments has a physically compromised cuticle. And hair that has been mechanically abused (rough towel drying, aggressive brushing, sleeping on cotton pillowcases) has lifted cuticle scales from the friction.
The key insight that most anti-frizz marketing glosses over is that the same symptom (frizz) can have completely different causes, which means completely different products are needed to fix it.
The two types of frizz most people do not know about
Understanding which type of frizz you have is the single most important thing you can do before buying any products. Get this wrong and you will waste money on products that cannot help you.
Humidity frizz
This is frizz that appears (or gets dramatically worse) when the air is humid. Your hair might look perfect when you leave the house and then balloon out within half an hour of stepping outside on a muggy day. The signature sign is that your hair is fine indoors but unmanageable outdoors.
Humidity frizz happens when moisture in the air is being absorbed into the hair shaft. The fix is to create a barrier on the outside of the hair that blocks that moisture from getting in. This is where anti-humidity sprays come in.
Damage frizz
This is frizz that is present regardless of the weather. Your hair feels rough, looks fluffy, and has flyaways even when you have just styled it indoors on a dry day. The ends might feel straw-like and your hair probably does not hold a style for long.
Damage frizz happens because the cuticle is actually damaged and will not lie flat no matter what the weather is doing. The fix here is to rebuild and hydrate the hair itself, which is a much longer process than just spraying a barrier on top. Anti-humidity products will only temporarily mask this kind of frizz.
Most people actually have a mix of both, and the truth is that treating both at once gives you the best results.
The anti-frizz product categories explained
Walk into any haircare aisle and you will see dozens of products claiming to fight frizz. Here is what each category actually does and when you should use it.
Anti-humidity sprays
These are the heroes for humidity frizz. They create a lightweight, invisible barrier on the outside of the hair that physically blocks humidity from being absorbed. They do not treat damage or add moisture. What they do brilliantly is stop good hair days from being ruined by the weather. Applied before blow-drying, the heat activates the formula and locks it in place for several washes.
Smoothing shampoos and conditioners
A good smoothing duo lays the foundation for everything else. They cleanse without stripping, they hydrate the hair, and they typically include ingredients that help seal the cuticle so less frizz develops in the first place. If you are fighting frizz daily, your shampoo and conditioner is the first thing to check, not the last.
Leave-in treatments
Leave-ins sit on damp hair after washing and work throughout the drying and styling process. They hydrate, detangle, add slip for styling, and often provide a degree of heat protection and frizz control. This is where you get the most "bang for buck" because one product is doing multiple jobs.
Rinse-out treatments
These are shorter, more intensive treatments used in the shower, typically after shampooing. Some modern formulas are genuinely impressive, with results that last days rather than hours.
Hair oils and serums
Hair oils add moisture, shine, and a light protective barrier, and they are particularly good for damage frizz. Serums tend to be silicone-based and sit on top of the hair for instant cosmetic shine and flyaway control. For a proper deep dive on this category, see our full hair oils explainer.
In-salon smoothing treatments
If you have severe frizz and nothing you do at home gets it under control, a professional smoothing treatment (like a Brazilian blow dry) will transform your hair for up to six months. This is not cheap, but for the right person it is genuinely life-changing.
Our anti-frizz salon picks
These are the products we genuinely reach for when clients ask us what actually works. No marketing spin, just honest recommendations from a working salon.
The hero anti-humidity spray: Color Wow Dream Coat Supernatural Spray 200ml
The Color Wow Dream Coat Supernatural Spray 200ml is the product that essentially created the modern anti-humidity category and it is still the benchmark everyone else is measured against. The way it works is genuinely clever. You spray it on damp hair before blow-drying and the heat activates a polymer technology that forms an invisible, hydrophobic (water-repelling) layer around each strand. Your hair literally becomes waterproof for three to four shampoos.
What makes it special is how invisible and weightless it feels. There is no residue, no heaviness, no greasy feel. It works on every hair type from fine to coarse and is safe on colour-treated hair, keratin-treated hair, and extensions. If you have curly or wavy hair specifically, the Color Wow Dream Coat for Curly Hair 500ml is a specially adapted version that maintains curl definition while blocking humidity.
This is the one we recommend more than any other anti-frizz product in the salon. If you only try one product from this entire guide, make it this one.
The multi-tasker: Amika The Shield Anti-Humidity Spray 232ml
The Amika The Shield Anti-Humidity Spray 232ml is what we reach for when somebody wants one product that does multiple jobs. It protects against humidity, heat (up to 230 degrees Celsius), and UV exposure, all in one lightweight spray. It keeps styles looking smooth for 24 hours or more even in genuinely humid conditions.
The scent is also unmistakable Amika, which is a pleasure in itself. If you are going on holiday somewhere warm and humid, throw a can of The Shield in your suitcase and your hair will thank you. It works as an alternative or complement to Dream Coat depending on your preference. Many of our clients end up using both, one for home and one for travel.
The 60-second transformation: Amika Smooth Over Frizz-Fighting Treatment
The Amika Smooth Over Frizz-Fighting Treatment is a rinse-out treatment that has genuinely impressed us. It is clinically proven to reduce frizz by up to 73% in just 60 seconds, and the results last up to 72 hours even after humidity testing. You use it in the shower after your shampoo, leave it for one minute, and rinse.
This is the one for anyone whose frizz is driving them genuinely mad and who does not want to commit to an in-salon smoothing treatment. The ingredients include glycolic acid (which seals the cuticle), sea buckthorn (Amika's signature hero ingredient), and aloe leaf juice for hydration. It is vegan, works on all hair types, and pairs brilliantly with a smoothing shampoo and conditioner. For best results we recommend pairing it with the Amika Velveteen Dream Shampoo and Conditioner for a complete smoothing routine.
The leave-in we rely on: Amika The Wizard Detangling Primer
The Amika The Wizard Detangling Primer is an all-in-one leave-in spray that detangles, smooths, protects against heat, and controls frizz, all while smelling incredible. Spray it on damp hair before blow-drying and it genuinely does speed up drying time while leaving the hair softer and more manageable. It is one of the most versatile products in the amika range and a brilliant daily workhorse.
The budget-friendly option: Paul Mitchell Clean Beauty Anti-Frizz Leave-In Treatment 150ml
Not everybody wants to spend £27 on a spray, and the Paul Mitchell Clean Beauty Anti-Frizz Leave-In Treatment 150ml is the one we recommend when price matters. It is a rich, nourishing leave-in with natural origin ingredients including hyaluronic acid and peptides, in eco-friendly bio-plastic packaging. Calms frizz, adds hydration, and makes hair more manageable. Vegan and cruelty-free. A brilliant everyday choice that punches above its price point.
The finishing serum: Framesi BY Smooth & Shine Serum 100ml
A good anti-frizz serum belongs in everybody's routine as a finishing product. The Framesi BY Smooth & Shine Serum 100ml is our go-to recommendation. It smooths frizz, adds glossy shine, and protects against heat and UV without weighing the hair down. One or two drops rubbed through the ends of dry hair is all you need. Genuinely excellent value for a professional serum.
Our oil picks for frizz
Hair oils are a brilliant addition to any anti-frizz routine. Our top picks specifically for frizz control are the Redken Frizz Dismiss Instant Deflate Oil-In-Serum 125ml, the Schwarzkopf Professional Bonacure Frizz Away Smoothing Oil 50ml for thick coarse hair, and the Wunderbar Vegan Smooth 'n Soft Magic Treat Oil 100ml for a vegan-friendly option.
For dry, frizzy hair that needs serious hydration alongside frizz control, the Amika Glass Action Universal Elixir 50ml is specifically formulated for the dry frizzy hair combination.
The anti-frizz routine we actually recommend
Products are only half the battle. How you use them matters just as much. Here is the exact routine we would build for somebody dealing with frizz.
Wash day
Start with a smoothing shampoo and conditioner. Avoid anything marketed as volumising (these are usually designed to lift the cuticle for body, which is the opposite of what you want). Shampoo once, rinse, then apply conditioner, focus on the mid-lengths and ends, and leave on for at least two to three minutes before rinsing with cool water. The cool rinse helps seal the cuticle.
Once or twice a week, use a deeper treatment. The Amika Smooth Over Frizz-Fighting Treatment takes just one minute in the shower and genuinely makes a noticeable difference.
Drying and styling
Gently squeeze excess water from your hair with a microfibre towel. Do not rub. Rubbing with a cotton towel is one of the biggest causes of unnecessary frizz.
On damp (not soaking) hair, apply your anti-humidity spray (Dream Coat or The Shield) and comb through. Add a leave-in treatment if your hair is particularly dry or damage-prone. Blow-dry from roots to ends, using a brush and medium-to-high heat. The heat is what activates the anti-humidity formula, so do not skip the blow dry if you want it to work.
Finishing
Once your hair is dry and styled, a drop of serum or a finishing oil worked through the ends adds gloss and controls any flyaways. This is also when to apply a final light mist of anti-humidity spray if you are heading out into humid conditions.
Common anti-frizz mistakes
A few things we see all the time that are making frizz worse, not better.
Using too many products at once. Layering an anti-humidity spray, a leave-in, an oil, and a serum on every wash is overkill. Your hair will feel coated and weighed down, and the products will work against each other. Pick two or three that target your specific issue and use them consistently.
Skipping the blow dry. Heat-activated products (like Dream Coat and The Shield) only work properly when you blow-dry. Air-drying with these products just leaves you with a slightly tacky, under-performing version of what you paid for.
Using a cotton towel and pillowcase. Cotton is extremely rough on hair cuticles and is one of the top causes of mechanical frizz damage. Switch to a microfibre towel for drying and a silk or satin pillowcase for sleeping. The difference after a few weeks is dramatic.
Over-washing. If you are washing your hair daily, you are stripping the natural oils that help keep the cuticle lying flat. Most hair types do better on two to three washes a week. Use a dry shampoo in between.
Brushing dry frizzy hair. Brushing dry hair lifts the cuticle and makes frizz worse instantly. Detangle in the shower with conditioner, or on damp hair with a leave-in. If you need to smooth dry hair during the day, use a boar bristle brush with a light spritz of product rather than a standard plastic brush.
Heat styling without protection. Every time you use heat on hair without protection, you are causing cuticle damage that makes frizz worse over time. A proper heat protection product is not optional.
When to consider a salon smoothing treatment
If you have tried the right products consistently for two or three months and your frizz is still making your daily life difficult, it is worth considering a professional smoothing treatment. At Revive we offer a Brazilian Blow Dry, a keratin-based treatment that smooths and strengthens the hair for up to six months. It is brilliant for frizzy, curly, or damaged hair and dramatically reduces styling time.
It is not a cheap treatment, but for clients whose hair has been a source of daily frustration for years, it is genuinely life-changing. If you are in the West Midlands and want to discuss whether it is right for you, a no-obligation consultation is always available.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best product for stopping frizzy hair?
For humidity-related frizz, an anti-humidity spray like Color Wow Dream Coat or Amika The Shield is the single most effective product category. For frizz caused by damage or dryness, a combination of a smoothing shampoo and conditioner plus a hydrating hair oil will give the best long-term results.
How do I stop my hair being frizzy in humid weather?
Apply an anti-humidity spray to damp hair before blow-drying. The heat activates a waterproof barrier around each strand that blocks moisture from the air from being absorbed into the hair shaft. Results typically last through three to four shampoos.
Why is my hair still frizzy after using anti-frizz products?
The most likely reason is that you are treating the wrong type of frizz. If your frizz is caused by hair damage rather than humidity, anti-humidity sprays will not help much because the damage is inside the hair shaft. You need a combination of deep hydration treatments, bond-building products, and in some cases a salon smoothing treatment.
Does coconut oil stop frizz?
Coconut oil does penetrate the hair shaft and can help with dryness, which may reduce damage-related frizz. However, it is heavy, can build up quickly, and offers no protection against humidity. Professional hair oils that blend multiple ingredients are typically more effective and versatile.
How often should I wash frizzy hair?
Two to three times a week for most hair types. Over-washing strips the natural oils that help keep the cuticle flat, making frizz worse. Use a dry shampoo between washes if needed.
Can I use anti-humidity spray on dry hair?
Some anti-humidity products work on dry hair as a touch-up between washes, but the primary application is on damp hair before blow-drying so the heat can activate the formula. Check your specific product's instructions.
Will a Brazilian blow dry stop my frizz permanently?
A Brazilian Blow Dry dramatically reduces frizz for up to six months, but it is a semi-permanent treatment. Your hair gradually returns to its natural texture over time. Many clients maintain the result with regular top-up treatments every four to six months.
