How to Moisturise Dry Hair: A 4-Step Routine
Thomas StrangwoodShare
It's time to moisturise your hair properly. Like the moisturiser you use on your face or body, your hair needs hydration too. It locks in nutrients, repairs damage and keeps the strands soft, shiny and resilient. The trick most people miss is that you don't need one moisturiser, you need different ones for different jobs.
Think about it the way you'd think about skincare. You don't use one product for everything. You have a lightweight everyday moisturiser, a richer night cream, a barrier-protecting balm, and an intensive weekly treatment. Hair works the same way, and Amika is one of the few brands that's built a complete moisturising routine that covers all four roles properly. We've sold and used Amika at Revive in Codsall for years, and here's the four-step moisturising routine we recommend most often.

Step 1: Amika Hydro Rush Intense Moisture Mask (The Weekly Deep Treatment)
Moisturiser type: Your most intense, richest treatment. Used once a week, or when your hair really needs reviving.
What it is: Amika Hydro Rush Intense Moisture Mask is the deep conditioning workhorse for dry, coarse, curly, coily or low porosity hair. The formula is built around hyaluronic acid (the same active that's been transforming skincare for years) which draws moisture into the hair shaft and locks it there. The clinical claims back it up: hair stays hydrated for 5 straight days, becomes 5 times easier to comb, and is 5 times more hydrated after a single use.
What makes it different from a normal conditioner is the texture and the formula. It's whipped into a rich, luscious cream that genuinely feels luxurious, and it's silicone-free so the nutrients soak into the strand rather than sitting on the surface as a glossy film. That's the difference between hair that looks moisturised for a day and hair that's actually hydrated for the week.
How to use it: While you're in the shower, squeeze excess water from freshly washed hair. Apply Hydro Rush from mid-lengths to ends, then comb through with a wide-tooth comb to disperse evenly. Let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes. Rinse thoroughly. Use weekly, or more often as needed if your hair is particularly thirsty.

Step 2: Amika Dream Routine Overnight Hydration Treatment (The Nightly Mask)
Moisturiser type: The treatment you reach for every night before bed. Think of it as a "night cream" for your hair.
What it is: Amika Dream Routine Overnight Hydration Treatment is the overnight hydration treatment that works while you sleep. The silicone-free formula leaves hair 3 times more hydrated by morning, with benefits that last up to 4 washes after a single application. Importantly, you don't rinse it out and it doesn't stain your pillow, so you can apply, sleep, and wake up to better hair without disrupting your sleep routine.
Overnight treatments work differently from rinse-out masks because the hair has hours rather than minutes to absorb the actives. Skincare brands have used this principle for years with night creams and overnight masks. Amika applied it to haircare and the results are noticeable from the first morning.
How to use it: Start by combing your hair to detangle. Pump 1 to 4 times into your hands depending on hair length and thickness (less for short and fine, more for long and thick). Apply to dry or damp hair, distributing from mid-lengths to ends. Go to bed. In the morning, style as usual without rinsing.
Pair this with a silk or satin pillowcase for the strongest combined effect. Cotton pillowcases draw moisture out of the hair overnight and re-roughen the cuticle, partially undoing the work the treatment is doing.
Step 3: Amika Supernova Moisture and Shine Cream (The Lightweight Everyday)
Moisturiser type: Your everyday lightweight moisturiser. The hair equivalent of a daily face moisturiser.
What it is: Amika Supernova Moisture and Shine Cream is a leave-in cream that provides weightless hydration and lightweight conditioning. The result is hair that's supernaturally soft, smooth and shiny without any of the heaviness you sometimes get from richer leave-ins.
This is the moisturiser that handles the everyday job: the bit between deeper treatments where your hair just needs a small amount of regular conditioning and shine. It also works as a refresh and tame product on dry hair (good for taming flyaways or reviving dry ends between washes), which means one bottle covers multiple uses.
For blondes: There's also a tonal version of this cream, the Amika Supernova Blonde Violet Moisture Cream, which combines the moisturising benefits with violet pigment to keep blonde hair cool-toned between washes. Perfect for blonde clients who want toning and hydration in one step.
How to use it: Use on either damp or dry hair. On damp hair, distribute a dime-sized amount through mid-lengths to ends, then style as usual. On dry hair, use a smaller amount to tame flyaways or refresh dry ends. For more leave-in options across professional brands, browse our leave-in conditioner collection.
Step 4: Amika Velveteen Dream Smoothing Balm (The Lightweight Smoother)
Moisturiser type: Your lightweight, soothing moisturiser that doubles as a styling product.
What it is: Amika Velveteen Dream Smoothing Balm tames frizz, protects hair from humidity, and provides a velvety-smooth dose of moisture all in one step. It's a great styling agent for dry or frizz-prone hair, and it pairs especially well with heat styling. The "velvet" descriptor isn't just marketing — the formula genuinely leaves hair feeling that distinctive soft, smooth, settled finish.
Where Supernova is built around moisture and shine, Velveteen Dream is built around moisture and frizz control. They're not interchangeable. If your hair is dry but well-behaved, Supernova is the right pick. If your hair is dry and frizz-prone, Velveteen Dream handles both at once.
How to use it: On damp hair, distribute a dime-sized amount through mid-lengths to ends. Heat style as desired. The balm works as a pre-style barrier as well as a moisturiser, so it's earning its place in your routine twice over.

How to Layer Them All: The Complete Amika Moisture Routine
The four products above work brilliantly on their own, but the real difference comes from using them as a system. Here's the complete weekly routine we use on dry-haired clients in the salon:
- Wash day (weekly): Cleanse with a hydrating shampoo (Amika Hydro Rush Shampoo or Normcore work well), then deep-condition with Hydro Rush Intense Moisture Mask. Rinse with cool water to lock in the moisture.
- Post-shower: While the hair is damp, apply a small amount of Supernova Moisture and Shine Cream (or Velveteen Dream Smoothing Balm if frizz is the bigger concern). Style as usual.
- Between washes: Refresh dry ends and tame flyaways with a tiny amount of Supernova on dry hair.
- Every night: Apply Dream Routine Overnight Hydration Treatment to mid-lengths and ends before bed. Sleep on a silk or satin pillowcase for the strongest effect.
- Next wash day: Repeat the mask, except after a couple of weeks of this routine you'll find your hair needs less of each product because it's actually properly hydrated rather than constantly catching up.

How to Tell What Type of Moisture Your Hair Actually Needs
Not all "dry hair" is the same. Use this quick checklist to identify which products you need most:
- Hair feels rough, tangly, and dehydrated at the strand: You need deep moisture. Start with the weekly Hydro Rush mask.
- Hair looks dull and lifeless even after washing: You need shine alongside moisture. Supernova Moisture and Shine Cream is your daily, with Hydro Rush weekly.
- Hair is dry AND frizzy: You need frizz-control moisture. Velveteen Dream Smoothing Balm is your daily, paired with Hydro Rush weekly.
- Hair feels dry overnight and you wake up to flat, lifeless strands: You need overnight moisture. Dream Routine is your nightly.
- Hair is colour-treated, bleached or chemically damaged: You need repair plus moisture. Switch the Hydro Rush mask for The Kure Bond Repair Mask weekly, then layer the lighter products on top. Our Amika deep conditioning guide covers this in detail.

Moisturising Hair FAQs
What's the difference between hydration and moisture for hair?
In skincare and haircare, "hydration" usually refers to water-based moisture (like hyaluronic acid drawing water into the hair shaft), while "moisture" refers more broadly to the oils and emollients that seal water in. Most hair needs both. Hydro Rush leans heavily on hydration (hyaluronic acid). Supernova and Velveteen Dream lean more on moisture (emollients and conditioning creams). Used together, you cover both bases.
Can I use all four Amika moisturisers in the same routine?
Yes, and the routine above is built around exactly that. Each product is formulated to do a different job, so they layer rather than compete. Use the weekly mask for depth, the overnight for sustained hydration, and either Supernova or Velveteen Dream daily depending on whether shine or frizz-control matters more to you.
Can I leave the Dream Routine treatment on for a day instead of overnight?
You can, but it's designed for overnight use specifically. The leave-in formula is meant to work over a full sleep cycle. Used in shorter windows it still adds moisture, but you won't get the full clinical benefit (3x more hydration by morning) unless you give it the full overnight period.
Is Amika Supernova a leave-in conditioner?
Effectively yes. It's marketed as a moisture and shine cream rather than as a "leave-in conditioner" specifically, but functionally it does the same job: applied to damp or dry hair, left in, no rinsing. It's lightweight enough to use daily without buildup.
Will moisturising hair products weigh down fine hair?
Not if you use the right ones and apply them correctly. Supernova and Velveteen Dream are both lightweight formulas suitable for fine hair when applied only to mid-lengths and ends. Hydro Rush can feel rich for very fine hair, in which case use it less often (every two weeks) and focus on the ends. The Dream Routine overnight treatment is the lightest of all four and works well on fine hair. Avoid applying any of them to the roots if your hair is fine.
How long does each Amika moisturiser typically last?
For weekly use on shoulder-length hair, the 250ml Hydro Rush Mask lasts about 3 to 4 months. The 100ml Dream Routine, Supernova and Velveteen Dream Balm typically last 2 to 4 months each depending on usage frequency. Longer or thicker hair will go through them faster.
Are all these products safe for colour-treated hair?
Yes. All four are colour-safe across the Amika range. The Supernova Blonde Violet version is specifically designed to maintain cool tones in blonde hair while moisturising. For more colour-safe options, browse our shampoo for coloured hair collection alongside.
Can I substitute these for cheaper alternatives?
You can use cheaper products and still see some improvement, but professional brands like Amika invest in actives (hyaluronic acid, polyglutamic acid, properly formulated emollients) that you usually don't find at supermarket price points. The difference shows up most in long-term hair health. For other professional brands in similar categories, browse our leave-in conditioner and treatments and masks collections.
Where can I learn more about the ingredients inside these products?
Our full Amika shampoo and conditioner ingredients guide breaks down every key active in the Amika range, including the hyaluronic acid, sea buckthorn, squalane and polyglutamic acid that run through the moisturising lines.
