How Maria Nila Structure Repair Shampoo Saves Damaged Hair

How Maria Nila Structure Repair Shampoo Saves Damaged Hair

Thomas Strangwood

If your hair feels rough, snaps when you brush it, or has lost its shine after months of colour, bleach, heat styling or chemical treatments, you don't need another generic "moisturising" shampoo. You need a shampoo that actively repairs the damage. Most don't. Maria Nila Structure Repair is one of the rare ones that does.

The whole Structure Repair range is built around algae extract, a genuinely effective repair active that goes beyond surface conditioning to rebuild the hair from inside. We've sold Maria Nila at Revive in Codsall for years, and Structure Repair is the line we reach for most often when a client walks in with damaged, over-processed or breakage-prone hair. Here's the proper salon guide to how it works, why it's different, and how to use the complete routine.

What Causes Hair Damage in the First Place?

Before getting into the product, it helps to understand what damage actually is. Healthy hair has a smooth cuticle (the outer protective layer) and an intact cortex (the inner structural layer that gives hair its strength). Damage breaks down both:

  • The cuticle gets roughened or lifted by heat styling, chemical processes, rough towel-drying or harsh shampoos. This shows up as frizz, dullness and tangling.
  • The cortex weakens through bleaching, colouring, perms, keratin treatments and excessive heat. This shows up as breakage, split ends, loss of elasticity, and that distinctive "stretchy" or "gummy" feel damaged hair gets when wet.

Generic moisturising shampoos can smooth the cuticle slightly, but they don't rebuild the cortex. To genuinely repair damaged hair, you need a shampoo with ingredients that actually penetrate and strengthen the internal structure. That's where algae extract comes in.

Why Algae Extract Repairs Hair

Algae extract is the hero ingredient of the Structure Repair line, and it's worth a moment to understand why. Algae is one of the most nutrient-dense plant sources on the planet, packed with amino acids, omega fatty acids, vitamins and minerals. When applied to hair, the smaller amino acids and proteins penetrate the cuticle and bind to the damaged areas of the cortex, effectively patching weak spots in the hair's internal structure.

Three things happen with consistent use:

  • Structural rebuilding. The amino acids fill gaps in the cortex where bleach or chemical processes have stripped the protein out. The hair becomes physically stronger.
  • Cuticle smoothing. The natural oils and emollients in algae also smooth the cuticle from the outside, which gives the visible shine and softness people notice immediately.
  • Long-term resilience. Over weeks of use, the hair becomes more resistant to future damage because the structure is genuinely stronger, not just temporarily coated.

This is the difference between a shampoo that makes hair look healthier (most "repair" shampoos) and a shampoo that actually makes hair healthier. Structure Repair is in the second category.

Maria Nila Structure Repair Shampoo

Maria Nila Structure Repair Shampoo 350ml

Maria Nila Structure Repair Shampoo is the foundation of the whole repair routine. The formula combines algae extract with a gentle sulphate-free cleansing base, so you're cleansing and repairing in the same step rather than washing your hair with one product and then trying to fix the damage with another.

The sulphate-free aspect matters more than most people realise for damaged hair. Standard sulphate-based shampoos strip the cuticle, which means damaged hair (which already has a compromised cuticle) loses even more moisture and protein every wash. Sulphate-free formulas like Structure Repair cleanse without that stripping effect, so the hair gets cleaner without getting more damaged in the process.

Other meaningful formulation details:

  • 100% vegan, certified by the Vegan Society
  • 100% cruelty-free, certified by Leaping Bunny
  • Climate-positive certified, with packaging using post-consumer recycled material
  • Sulphate-free and paraben-free
  • Colour-safe, so it works for the bleached and coloured hair that needs it most

Sizes available: 100ml travel, 350ml standard, 1 Litre salon size. The 350ml is our most popular and lasts most clients about 3-4 months with regular use.

Who Is Structure Repair For?

This range is built specifically for hair that's been through something. It's not a "nice to have" for healthy hair (in that case, look at the True Soft range for argan-oil-based moisture). It's the right pick for:

  • Bleached blonde or platinum hair where the lightening process has weakened the cortex
  • Colour-treated hair that's lost shine and feels rougher than it used to
  • Frequent heat-styled hair where straighteners, curlers or hot dryers have caused cumulative damage
  • Chemically processed hair from perms, relaxers, keratin treatments or Brazilian blowouts
  • Highlights and balayage where the lightened sections need extra structural support
  • Hair that's snapping, breaking or showing visible split ends
  • Hair that feels rough or "gummy" when wet (a classic sign of cortex damage)

If your hair is dry but not actually damaged, the Maria Nila True Soft Shampoo is a better fit. We've covered the differences in detail in our argan oil for hair guide.

Building the Complete Structure Repair Routine

A shampoo on its own is a good start, but the full repair routine is what genuinely transforms damaged hair. The Structure Repair line includes four products designed to layer:

Step 1: Structure Repair Shampoo

As above. Double-cleanse if your hair has heavy product buildup. Otherwise one wash is enough.

Step 2: Structure Repair Conditioner

Maria Nila Structure Repair Conditioner

Maria Nila Structure Repair Conditioner is the daily-use conditioner that pairs with the shampoo. Same algae-extract base, in a lightweight conditioning formula that detangles and smooths without weighing the hair down. Apply to mid-lengths and ends only (never the roots), leave for 1-2 minutes, then rinse with cool water for maximum shine.

Available in 100ml travel and 1 Litre salon size.

Step 3: Structure Repair Masque (Weekly)

Maria Nila Structure Repair Masque 250ml

Maria Nila Structure Repair Masque is the weekly deep treatment that takes the routine from "noticeably better" to "genuinely transformed." Where the conditioner sits on the hair for 1-2 minutes, the masque sits for 5-10 minutes, giving the algae extract significantly more time to penetrate and rebuild the cortex.

Use once a week in place of your normal conditioner. For very damaged hair, twice a week for the first month, then drop back to weekly maintenance once the hair is feeling stronger.

Step 4: Structure Repair Leave-In Cream

Maria Nila Structure Repair Leave-In Cream 200ml

Maria Nila Structure Repair Leave-In Cream is the post-shower finisher that extends the repair benefit through the day. Apply to damp hair after washing, focusing on the mid-lengths and ends, then style as usual. The cream provides ongoing strengthening protection between washes and acts as a soft styling base.

It's also brilliant before heat styling because it provides a layer of thermal protection alongside the repair benefit. For heavier heat protection, layer with a dedicated heat protectant from our heat protection collection.

The Full Weekly Routine

For genuinely damaged hair, this is the routine we recommend in the salon. Used consistently for 4 to 6 weeks, the difference is usually visible to anyone, not just you.

  1. Wash with Structure Repair Shampoo. Double cleanse if needed. Cool to lukewarm water, not hot.
  2. Once a week: Apply Structure Repair Masque, leave for 5-10 minutes, rinse thoroughly.
  3. All other wash days: Apply Structure Repair Conditioner to mid-lengths and ends, leave 1-2 minutes, rinse with cool water.
  4. Towel dry gently with a microfibre towel or T-shirt. No rough scrubbing.
  5. Apply Structure Repair Leave-In Cream to damp hair. Comb through to distribute evenly.
  6. Style as usual. Apply heat protection if you're using straighteners or curlers.

For maximum impact, also pay attention to the supporting habits:

  • Reduce heat styling frequency while you're rebuilding. Even one or two heat-free days a week helps.
  • Lower your heat tool temperatures. 180-190°C is plenty for most styles; 220°C is overkill and causes ongoing damage.
  • Sleep on silk or satin to reduce overnight friction damage.
  • Get regular trims. Repair products can rebuild some of the hair, but split ends physically need cutting off. Every 8-10 weeks is sensible during a recovery period.
  • Cool water rinses help the cuticle stay flat and lock the repair benefit in. We covered the science in our cold water rinse guide.

The Wider Maria Nila Range

If your hair has multiple concerns or you want to mix lines, here's how Structure Repair fits with the rest of the Maria Nila range:

  • Structure Repair + True Soft: Alternate between the two for damaged hair that also runs dry. Use Structure Repair 2-3 times a week, True Soft on the other wash days. Our True Soft guide goes deeper.
  • Structure Repair + Luminous Colour: For damaged, colour-treated hair. The Luminous Colour Shampoo uses pomegranate extract for colour preservation alongside the repair work.
  • Structure Repair + Sheer Silver: For damaged blonde or bleached hair that's also going brassy. Structure Repair handles the damage, Sheer Silver Shampoo handles the tone. We covered Sheer Silver in detail in our Sheer Silver guide.
  • Structure Repair + Pure Volume: For damaged fine hair. The Pure Volume range uses Provitamin B5 for body without weight.
  • Structure Repair + Coils & Curls: For damaged curly or coily hair. The Coils & Curls Co-Wash works alongside Structure Repair for curl-specific moisture.

Structure Repair Shampoo FAQs

How long until I see results from Structure Repair?

Many clients notice softer, shinier hair after the first wash, but the structural repair builds over weeks. For genuinely damaged hair, give the full routine 4 to 6 weeks of consistent use to see the visible difference in strength, elasticity and resilience. The shorter timeline is the cosmetic improvement; the longer timeline is the actual rebuilding.

Can I use Structure Repair every day?

Yes, it's gentle enough for daily use thanks to the sulphate-free formula. That said, most damaged hair benefits from washing 2-4 times a week rather than daily, because over-washing (even with a gentle shampoo) can dry the hair out. Build dry shampoo into your routine for between-wash freshness if needed. Browse our dry shampoo collection for options.

Will Structure Repair work on heavily bleached hair?

Yes, and bleached hair is one of the primary targets for this range. Bleach is one of the most damaging processes hair can go through because it strips the protein out of the cortex. The algae extract in Structure Repair is specifically designed to replace that lost protein. For very damaged bleached hair, use the full routine (shampoo + conditioner + weekly masque + daily leave-in) and expect to see consistent improvement over 6-8 weeks of consistent use.

Is Structure Repair safe for coloured hair?

Yes. The whole range is colour-safe and sulphate-free, so it won't strip dye or shift tone. Many colour-treated clients benefit from it because colouring is itself a damaging process that Structure Repair helps undo.

Is Structure Repair vegan and cruelty-free?

Yes to both. Maria Nila is 100% vegan (Vegan Society certified), 100% cruelty-free (Leaping Bunny certified), and climate-positive certified. The whole range is sulphate-free, paraben-free and colour-safe.

Can I use Structure Repair with keratin or Brazilian treatments?

Yes. The sulphate-free formula means it's safe to use after keratin smoothing treatments or Brazilian blowouts, where standard sulphate shampoos would strip the treatment. In fact, Structure Repair is one of the more popular shampoos we recommend to clients post-keratin because it helps maintain the treatment while also supporting the hair underneath.

How long does a 350ml bottle of Structure Repair Shampoo last?

For 2-3 washes a week with shoulder-length hair, a 350ml lasts about 3-4 months. Longer or thicker hair will go through it slightly faster. The 1 Litre salon size is the better value for daily users or families sharing the bottle.

What's the difference between Structure Repair and True Soft?

Structure Repair is for damaged hair (caused by colour, bleach, heat or chemicals). It uses algae extract to rebuild the cortex. True Soft is for naturally dry hair that hasn't been chemically damaged. It uses argan oil to add moisture. If your hair is both damaged AND dry, alternate between the two ranges for the best of both. For more on True Soft, see our argan oil for hair guide.

Can I use the Structure Repair Leave-In Cream as a heat protectant?

It provides some thermal protection, but for regular high-heat styling (above 200°C), pair it with a dedicated heat protectant for additional cover. The leave-in's main job is ongoing repair, with heat protection as a supporting benefit. Browse our heat protection collection for purpose-built options.
