Is Fanola No Yellow Good?
Thomas StrangwoodShare
Fanola No Yellow is one of the most searched purple shampoo brands in the UK and for good reason, it is one of the most intensely pigmented purple shampoos available at any price point. But is it actually good? And is it right for your hair? We stock the full Fanola range here at Revive Hair Artists in Codsall and we have been recommending it to clients for years. And honestly, I always thought it was a bit of a dated brand until we were reintroduced to it 10 years ago. So here is hour honest thought on Fanola No Yellow
What is Fanola No Yellow?
Fanola No Yellow is a professional purple shampoo designed to neutralise yellow and brassy tones in blonde, highlighted, bleached and grey hair. The purple pigment in the shampoo works on the colour wheel principle, purple cancels out yellow, so applying purple pigment to yellow-toned hair brings it back to a cooler, more neutral tone. Fanola's No Yellow range is known for having one of the highest pigment concentrations of any purple shampoo on the market, which is both its biggest strength and the main thing to be careful about.
Does Fanola No Yellow actually work?
Yes — very effectively. It is one of the most powerful toning shampoos we stock and the results are genuinely impressive on yellow or brassy blonde hair. Clients who come in between colour appointments with brassy regrowth and use No Yellow consistently come back looking significantly brighter and cooler-toned. It works.

Fanola Wonder No Yellow Shampoo
The Fanola No Yellow Shampoo is the one to go for if you have blonde, bleached or highlighted hair that tends to go yellow or brassy between appointments. It has a very high violet pigment concentration so even a short contact time gives a noticeable toning effect. For very yellow hair, leave it on for 3 to 5 minutes. For maintenance, 1 to 2 minutes is usually enough. Start with a short contact time and build up — it is much easier to add more tone than to remove it.
Can Fanola No Yellow turn your hair purple?
Yes — if you leave it on too long or use it too frequently on very pale or porous hair it absolutely can turn your hair purple. This is the most common complaint about the product and it is a genuine risk with any highly pigmented purple shampoo, but particularly with Fanola No Yellow given how concentrated it is.
The fix is simple though — start with a very short contact time (30 to 60 seconds) on your first use, see how much tone it deposits, and then adjust from there. Fine, pale blonde or bleached hair should always start with a very short contact time. Darker blonde or highlighted hair can handle longer. And if you do end up with a purple tint — do not panic. It will wash out within a few washes with a regular shampoo.
Fanola No Yellow vs Fanola Wonder No Yellow — what is the difference?
This is a question we get asked a lot. The original Fanola No Yellow is the more intensely pigmented version — brilliant for very yellow or brassy hair that needs serious toning. The Fanola Wonder No Yellow is a slightly gentler formulation designed for regular weekly use, with additional conditioning ingredients that make it kinder to the hair with frequent use. For most people the Wonder No Yellow is the better everyday choice. The original No Yellow is brilliant for occasional use when you need a more dramatic toning result.

Fanola Wonder No Orange Shampoo
If your hair goes orange rather than yellow between appointments, this is the one you need. The Wonder No Orange uses blue pigment rather than violet to neutralise orange tones, which makes it brilliant for brunettes who lighten their hair and find it pulls orange or warm red. Very popular with balayage clients who have brown hair with lighter pieces that go warm quickly.

Fanola Wonder No Red Shampoo
A newer addition to the Fanola Wonder range, the No Red uses green-toned pigment to neutralise red and copper tones from the hair. Brilliant for darker brunettes or black hair that fades to red or auburn in the sun, and for anyone with naturally red pigment in their hair who wants to keep their colour looking cool and ashy.
Is the Fanola No Yellow mask worth it?

Fanola No Yellow Hair Mask 350ml
Yes — the Fanola No Yellow Mask is genuinely excellent and we recommend it alongside the shampoo. The mask deposits violet pigment for longer and the thicker consistency means it is easier to control the application and contact time. Used once a week as a toning treatment it gives a noticeably cooler, brighter blonde result and the conditioning ingredients leave the hair feeling soft and healthy. For bleached or highlighted hair that needs both toning and conditioning, the mask is a brilliant two-in-one solution.
Our verdict on Fanola No Yellow
Fanola No Yellow is genuinely brilliant, it is one of the most effective toning shampoos available at any price point and the results speak for themselves. Just respect the contact time, particularly if your hair is pale or porous, and start shorter than you think you need to. Used correctly it is one of the best purple shampoos on the market.
