Olaplex No.3 Plus: How to Use It Properly (Salon Guide)
Thomas StrangwoodShare
Olaplex No.3 is the single most popular product in the entire Olaplex range and the one almost everybody starts with. It is the at-home treatment that delivers the most noticeable single-product result, and it is the bridge between professional in-salon Olaplex services and a proper home routine.
This guide covers everything you actually need to know to use Olaplex No.3 Plus Complete Repair Treatment properly, how often, how long, what to do with the rest of your routine, and whether it lives up to the hype.
What Olaplex No.3 Plus actually is
No.3 Plus is the updated formula that replaced the original No.3 Hair Perfector. It is a pre-shampoo treatment that contains Olaplex's patented Bond Building Technology (Bis-Aminopropyl Diglycol Dimaleate) plus a new Damage Defense Cationic Complex. Used together, these ingredients rebuild broken hair bonds, smooth the cuticle and provide ongoing damage defence.
It is not a conditioner. It does not replace conditioner. It works inside the hair shaft to rebuild the structural bonds that get broken by bleaching, colouring, perming, heat styling and everyday wear. This is what makes it fundamentally different from a typical conditioning treatment, most conditioners coat the outside of the hair to make it feel smoother, whereas No.3 actually rebuilds the hair from the inside out.
The formula is protein-free, colour-safe, and suitable for all hair types and all kinds of damage.
How to use Olaplex No.3 Plus properly
The application is simple and the same every time:
- Start with damp, towel-dried hair. The hair should be wet but not dripping. Do not apply to dry hair — the formula needs moisture to penetrate properly.
- Apply a generous amount through the lengths and ends. For shoulder-length hair, around two tablespoons is right. For longer or thicker hair, use more. Coverage matters more than economy — patchy application gives patchy results.
- Comb through to distribute evenly. A wide-tooth comb works well. You want every strand coated, not just the surface.
- Leave on for at least 10 minutes. Olaplex's official guidance is a minimum of 10 minutes. Leaving it on longer (up to overnight) does no harm and may give better results for very damaged hair.
- Rinse, then shampoo and condition as normal. The treatment activates during the leave-on time, and the bond-building work continues after rinsing.
That is the entire process. There is no need to apply heat, no need to wrap the hair, no need for any additional steps. The treatment does its work on its own.
How often should you use Olaplex No.3 Plus?
The standard recommendation is once a week. For most people that is the right frequency, enough to maintain the results without being excessive.
For severely damaged or freshly bleached hair, you can use it more often. Twice a week is fine. Three times a week is fine in the immediate aftermath of a chemical service. Olaplex have stated that there is no upper limit on how often the product can be used safely. The bond-building technology does not over-process the hair the way protein-based treatments can.
Once your hair condition stabilises, dropping back to once a week is the long-term maintenance frequency.
How long does one bottle last?
The 250ml bottle of No.3 Plus gives roughly 12 to 20 applications depending on hair length and density. For weekly use, that is approximately three to five months. We also stock smaller and larger sizes, a 100ml for trying it out and a 370ml for regular users.
What to pair No.3 Plus with
No.3 on its own delivers a noticeable result. No.3 used as part of a system delivers significantly better results. The two main pairings worth knowing about:
Pair with No.0 for maximum repair. Olaplex No.0 Intensive Bond Building Hair Treatment is applied first as a primer — sprayed onto dry hair, left for 10 minutes — and then No.3 is applied directly on top. Olaplex's own clinical data shows 68% more repair and 3x stronger hair when the two are used as a two-part system in one treatment.
Pair with No.4 shampoo and No.5 conditioner for daily maintenance. Olaplex No.4 Bond Maintenance Shampoo and Olaplex No.5 Bond Maintenance Conditioner continue the bond-building work with every wash. The weekly No.3 treatment plus daily No.4 and No.5 use is the core Olaplex system that most users settle into.
If you want the full pairing in one purchase, the Olaplex Best of the Bond Builders Kit contains No.0, No.3, No.4 and No.5 together at a better per-product price than buying separately.
What results to expect
The first application tends to give a noticeable improvement in softness and smoothness. The hair will feel different almost immediately.
The structural repair takes longer. The bond-building work is cumulative — each treatment rebuilds more bonds, and the improvement compounds over time. Most clients see a real difference in strength and condition after three to four weekly applications. For heavily bleached hair, the full benefit takes two to three months of consistent use.
What No.3 Plus will not do: it will not fix split ends. Once a hair has split, the only solution is to cut it off. It will not turn very damaged hair into healthy hair overnight, it is a process, not a miracle. And it will not undo years of cumulative damage in a single bottle.
What it will do, used consistently: significantly improve the strength, softness, manageability and shine of damaged hair, and prevent further breakage from chemical and heat damage.
Common mistakes to avoid
Applying to dry hair. The formula needs damp hair to penetrate properly. Apply to towel-dried hair, not dry hair, and not soaking wet hair.
Using too little. Olaplex No.3 is not a leave-in styling product — it is a treatment, and treatments need full coverage to work. Use enough to coat every strand.
Not leaving it on long enough. Five minutes is not enough. Ten minutes is the minimum. Longer is better for damaged hair.
Treating it as a conditioner. No.3 replaces a weekly mask, not a daily conditioner. You still need to shampoo and condition afterwards.
Expecting instant transformation. The first application improves softness. The structural repair is cumulative and takes weeks.
Our take from the salon
We recommend No.3 Plus to almost every client who has had bleach, foils, balayage or any kind of chemical service. The conversation usually starts with "my hair feels like straw" and ends with us showing them a bottle of No.3.
The results we see are consistent enough that we are confident recommending it. Clients who use it weekly come back with hair that is genuinely in better condition than it was at their previous appointment. The product does what it claims to do, and the bond-building science is real and well-documented.
Where it falls short is when expectations are unrealistic. Clients sometimes expect a single application to transform years of damage. It will not. But used consistently as part of a proper routine, it is the most effective at-home repair treatment available.
FAQs
Can I leave Olaplex No.3 Plus on overnight?
Yes. Olaplex confirm that overnight use is safe and may give better results for very damaged hair. Sleep with the hair in a towel or shower cap to protect bedding.
