Male Hair Loss
If you're here, then you're most certainly in the same boat as me and you're looking for a solution to either thinning hair or a solution to hair loss.
If you are unfortunate enough to be suffering from loss of hair, then you'll know how hard it can be, There seems to be a certain idea that it doesn't matter if men lose their hair but honestly, It can really be quite an upsetting thought for a lot of men! I know it's not something I've enjoyed the idea of.
So we're going to take a look at certain reasons you may be experiencing hair loss or hair thinning, what products there are on the market and what other non-surgical hair loss solutions are on the market today.
Types Of Hair Loss
Hair Loss Caused By DHT (Dihydrotestosterone)
If you've been doing your research, then you'll no doubt have already seen that hair loss is caused by a hormone known as DHT (Dihydrotestosterone).
This hormone is an androgen (male sex hormone) that is made from testosterone in the prostate, testes, and certain other tissues and is required in order to both develop and maintain male sex characteristics. The testosterone converts to DHT with the help of 5α-reductase (pronounced 5-alpha-reductase), an enzyme that is held in the oil glands of a hair follicle.
Some people are naturally more prone to male pattern baldness that DHT causes when it binds to receptors in the hair follicles, This binding causes the follicle to miniaturize and eventually stop growing altogether.
Research has proven that genetics does play a huge role in male pattern hair loss but research is still unsure as to why this runs in some families and not others.
If you've continued searching, you may have come across something called DHT Blockers, You may have even started to come across the hair loss shampoo's ( or Anti-Hair Loss Shampoos) there are many of them on the market and there are always new hair loss shampoos coming out with many different ingredients. The question we want to ask though, Is "Do Hair Loss Shampoos Really Work? And Can Shampoo Really Regrow Hair?"
Can I Naturally Reduce DHT Levels
So, After reading that DHT can cause hair loss, It's only natural that you're going to be looking for a solution on how to reduce DHT levels, Usually, You would consult your doctor however, it's understandable that not everybody would want the doctors to be their first point of call, especially when there are potentially other options on the market that are both less expensive and much easier obtainable.
There are some potential natural DHT blockers such as Biotin, Pumpkin Seed Oil, Green Tea, and Saw Palmetto. Ingredients such as this have such big reputations among men that have hair loss.
There have been clinical trials on these ingredients which have shown mixed results
Skin Conditions That Cause Hair Loss
For example, Your may be losing your hair due to one of many scalp conditions such as seborrheic dermatitis which you've most definitely heard of as it's more commonly known as dandruff! Skin conditions such as psoriasis can also cause hair loss. These would just be two examples of where anti-hair loss shampoo may be effective as the hair loss may be caused by inflammation due to these two skin conditions.
Deficiencies That Cause Hair Loss
It's also very important to take a look at your diet, Diet can be a big cause of hair loss and there can be a few different deficiencies that can cause hair loss/hair thinning, Some of these include:
- Not Enough Iron-Rich Foods
- Low Vitamin D
- Zinc Deficiency
- Selenium Deficiency
With some of the vitamin deficiencies mentioned above, It may not be just the hair that you notice issues with, You may notice hair loss in other areas such as your eyebrows and eyelashes! Taking this into account, If you reflect on your diet and realize it perhaps isn't as healthy as it perhaps could be, this may be the perfect starting point for you. However, it's always important to never self-diagnose, consult your doctor who can easily test for any vitamin deficiencies.
Hair Loss Caused By Stress and Anxiety
After 2020, I feel that this one would be relatable to many of us on many levels, especially if your home also became your place of work when lockdown started!
Almost two-thirds of people state stress as the number one reason for their hairs loss of volume and thickness above age, hormone changes, illness, and medication.
We all know that stress and anxiety cause many different health problems and hair loss is one of them! But why does stress cause hair loss and hair thinning?
When we experience stress, our body enters a fight or flight mode, during this, our bodies release hormones and chemicals that include cortisol which provides us with an adrenaline spike, However, we know that many of us are experiencing chronic stress which causes continuous production of these hormones. This continuous production of hormones can eventually reach a point where levels can no longer be brought back under control and our organs can be prevented from creating other important hormones and chemicals, including those which help to promote healthy hair growth.
Can Covid Cause Hair Loss?
A recent addition to our list is unfortunately Covid-19. It has been well observed by many people who are recovering from Covid-19 (Myself included) that hair loss can be a part of the recovery. The reason for this, Is when the body is fighting an infection, it will re-route nutrients away from the hair follicles, This affects the hair growth cycle which causes more shedding in a shorter space of time than what we would usually experience.
Hair Thickening Shampoos
The bottom line is that there is no shampoo clinically proven to grow your hair back, however, there are many shampoos on the market that can make your hair look instantly thicker and fuller.
Some of the current hair thickening shampoos on the market are absolutely incredible and whilst they may seem more on the expensive side, we've personally found that professional brand shampoos and conditioners do tend to go much further than the less expensive drug store brands, So that's something to keep in mind.
Top Shampoos For Thicker Hair
- The first one on my list is going to be from one of the biggest names in the hair loss industry, And that is Nioxin. Nioxin has been around for such a long time now and they have a hair care product for almost everybody, even those of us with colored hair.
Their hair system works by amplifying the hair structure and protecting the hair against further breakage however if you're looking to get the best value for money, we'd recommend that you buy one of the Nioxin trial kits which gives you a set of three products, a cleanser, a conditioner, and a scalp treatment.
- Next on the list is one of my favorite brands Amika! As of this blog post, we've been retailing Amika Hair Products for almost two years and we're glad that they've now got a hair-thickening shampoo!
The Amika 3D Volumizing and Thickening Shampoo will plump your hair from root to tip while simultaneously improving your hair's volume and manageability, and lightly moisturizing your hair without weighing it down!
